So I Have a 1911 I want customized and rebuilt. I have been drooling over the 1911 gurus from the states fro the past few years. I am looking at smiths like Heirloom Precision, Jason Burton, Yost Bonitz, Larry Davidson, and a lot more. It does not seem like I can send my pistol state side, so is their anyone who does work on par with these guys. Remember I said on par. Same same. Any help would be appreciated.
James.

I'm in the same boat. My dream is to get a full custom 1911 built by Joe Chambers (Chambers Custom) He currently has a 4 year waiting list. Take a look at his website. Others I've looked at are John Harrison (Harrison Design). I've looked at all the ones you mentioned and the work they do is unbelievable. There's just so many guys down there doing incredible work.

I'm going to look at exporting my gun and then re-importing it. I know the Colt Custom shop will accept Canadian guns but aren't accepting new jobs at present due to a backlog. So many of these custom 1911 guys have huge waiting lists. I may just buy a donor gun send it off and forget about it and then one day it'll come back.

Couldn't you just use irunguns or a similar company?

If exporting to the states is a issue could you not just purchase a 1911 online in the states and have it delivered to your smith of choice then once done have it exported by one of the normal companies?

Comp gun, carry gun, just straight 5" ?

Not sure Dlask does comp guns anymore but you can get a full custom 1911 that's as good as anyone else's for sure. IIRC bumblebee custom is turning out very nice work. Not sure Paul Barrette is still smithing but you can try him at Snapshots.

Those are the one's who come to mind atm. We've got talent up here, you just need to shop around.

I have never seen a Dlask that was even remotely approaching a $7000 Heirloom Precision.

I would be REALLY curious to see what people think is in the league of guys like Jason Burton or Chuck Rogers that you can get from Dlask. As far as I'm concerned these are radically different leagues.

Nobody in Canada that compares to those guys, however there are other options for you.

Wanstalls (Sponsor) has Ed Brown, Les Baer and Nighthawk 1911's for sale here in Canada. They are as good as it gets for semi-custom. It's hard to think of a full custom being any better.

Another option is you can now purchase $500 worth of gun parts from Brownells (US) at a time. Buying drop in parts allow any competent gunsmith to customize your 1911. Start with a good off the shelf 1911 and make it into a great one.

I have ordered a Cylinder and Slide 3.5 pound trigger kit, Ed Brown Mag well and thumb safety, and Warren competition sights for my COLT Rail Gun. The gun is already tight, has a National Match Barrel, is reliable, looks great and is a COLT, so now I customize an already great gun.

I will be using a competent gunsmith to get it done right and should have the gun back two weeks after I bring it in.

Just another option.

If I had the bucks, the Ed Brown fully engraved Signature Edition could probably be ordered through Wanstalls and it is just about the prettiest 1911 I've ever seen. MSRP $7195

Try Pistol Dynamics and an importer like Prophet River. Liebenberg's work is legendary, for a slightly different flavor maybe Mars Armament - either way, you need an exporter. I suggest those two because they will both start with a pistol that you didn't ship them.

Incidentally this - Wanstalls (Sponsor) has Ed Brown, Les Baer and Nighthawk 1911's for sale here in Canada. They are as good as it gets for semi-custom. It's hard to think of a full custom being any better. isn't correct, there's a reason that a guy selling $750 worth of parts for $7000 has a four year backlog of orders, and it's not because they're doing something that you can get for $4K somewhere else. This isn't a knock on Wilson, Brown et al, but the guys way up there do pretty much everything by hand, one at a time - many of them use hand tools where ever possible.

Heirloom has completed guns for sale right now, no waiting. You could import them through one of the sponsors.
