Scope power is the preference of the user, not the distance of the target. I used my 10-50 at 50x, to shoot at 100y. Why? Because I like seeing the grains in the paper of the bulls eye. I like having high magnification scopes so I can see the target better. Who cares what the range is.

Do you really think this gun...or any M14, for that matter...can utilize a scope that powerful? I've had a few M14's (Norcs), never really fell in love with 'em (although I'm starting to feel that way about my current Dominion Socom version), but I've never produced the kind of accuracy that calls for a 6-24x scope. More to the point, I've never seen anyone else produce that level of accuracy, even here on CGN where everyone is a world-class sniper . Is this intended to be a 1000yard target gun?

Honestly, the weight and bulk of a scope like that is a PITA. Why tolerate it when your results probably won't be any better than those you'd get with a smaller, lighter scope? Not to mention the fact that a scope-smasher like the M14 will "have its way" with a heavy scope much more destructively than with a lighter one. The scope on H2O MAN's gun seems much more appropriate and well-balanced.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but asking a legitimate question.

Totally fair question, tho there are members here who have shown us the capabilities of their particular rifles at 1000 yards. I may not target shoot at that range often, but I have at least one rifle capable of hitting, with accuracy at that range. Now, I dunno if I'm capable to shoot that rifle at 1000 all the time, but the rifle can do it, based on it's track record out to 600. The only limitter would be the optic and my shooting abilty at "longish" ranges (600 to 1000)
I have a 12 year old Visiontac ebay special , 6-18x52 BDC turret scope on my LRB M25, 22" medium stainless barrel 1/12 twist. Still holding and tracking well after a few thousand rounds on 3 rifles in 12 years.

That is a fair question.

Why 6-24x50 mil/mil?

Because I have 2 different scopes in that config. already. I can dial down to 6x, and I can zero in on a particular corner of an aiming point at 200y. I have learned how to use the mil reticle to range targets at differing ranges (as long as I know the size of what I'm looking at).

I have shot out to 1000y with a bolt gun, I know that I am capable.

I don't plan on using this particular build out that far, I'm thinking more like 800y Max.

I know that a bushnell straight 10x would probably be more that sufficient , or a 3-9VX-3 but I hope to do just a bit more with this rifle......

I don't feel that the scopes I have are up to the task, they check all the "boxes", but I don't feel they are up to the M-14s recoil impulse........

I will likely just use the vortex I already have (viper PST 6-24x50 EBR-2), if it piles up I can get a replacement under warranty......
