I've accumulated some really nice rifles over the years, .358 Norma, 9.3 x 62, .35 Whelen, .33 WCF and most recently a .348 WCF. I've decided that it's time to stop spending money on guns and start saving up for a big hunting trip. I would like to do a grizzly bear hunt and or a moose hunt up in the Yukon or NWT. I live in Ontario. So does anybody have any suggestions on how I would get set up for a great hunt, who to go with, where to go, what the license arrangements are? How much should I be prepared to spend for a hunt like this?

Best regards,

When I was shopping for a moose/grizzly hunt I phoned 5 different outfitters. I was shopping for northern B.C. mind you and I had a copy of Mountain Hunter magazine. I called these outfitters to ask some basic questions. I was amazed that of the 5 only one called me back!! I am sure the others are good outfits but they obviously didn't need my money. If you go to GOABC which is the Guide Outfittes Association of B.C. they will have a list of outfits in B.C. - Yukon and the Nwt.

Shopping pays and ask questions. I had the time of my life and you are on the right track for sure. Time to turn a dream into reality! P.M. me if interested in my outfitter.

Good luck

If you hunt the Yukon, I have a little experience to share. I have hunted three times with Ceaser Lake outfitters. A very good operator and honest as they come. Terry Wilkinson has a huge area of really wild country, and good numbers of very big moose. They are the larger Alaska/Yukon subspecies. There are grizzlies throughout the area, but they are scattered and not numerous anywhere, although we saw grizzly sign many times. Most Yukon hunts are mixed - bag, Moose and grizzly can be combined, or moose/caribou/grizzly. the hunts are expensive, figure about $15000 range ( I haven't checked for a while) I believe grizzly is best hunted in spring as a single species hunt. A 10 day horseback hunt in the Yukon is a wonderful experience and worth every penny. I just wish it wasn't so many pennies!

I have been in contact with an outfitter in Northern BC who offers moose hunts and who has an opening this fall, as it turns out I am unable to go this year, so you might try Nanika guiding near Burns Lake BC. His offerings were much more affordable and hunter success high for more modest sized moose, and he has clients take a few grizzly too.
