Hello CGNers,

I live in Ontario and would like to start looking into a mule deer hunt in the next few years. It wouldn't be this fall but maybe in about 3 or 4 years from now. Do any of you have any experience of going through outfitters out West?

It would likely be myself and one or two other guys.

Please let me know when you have a moment.

Best regards,

The best, Calgary. I went 2 years ago with Willow Creek Outfitters. Great spot, and the guides know their stuff!

Unfortunately in Saskatchewan we are not allowed to share our mule deer with other Canadians. I wish we had a resident hunter as host system at least, but even though we have lots of mule deer you will need to look at AB or BC.

Check out Mike Ukrainetz at Mike's Outfitting, Spirit River, Alberta. I can not personally vouch for him, but he has been in the business a long time, and has good reputation. He specializes in big mule deer and is normally booked up 2 years in advance. That should not not a problem for you though, as you are doing your planning well in advance. The only concern I would have with hunting in his area northern Alberta is winter mortality. A bad winter can kill off most of the mature bucks. On the flip side of the coin, there are monster sized mule deer because it is the northern fringe of their habitat. Look up Bergmann's rule after you look up Mike's website. :)

...let's start with raising quotas for residents first shall we...

I guided for Double Diamond Outfitters (just south-west of Calgary) for 8 years. While I was there, we had taken some very big mule deer bucks. Smallest buck I can remember scored 170 B&C. Gordon and Tracy Burton are the owners.......great people!

How about not... The reason we have the best mule deer in the world is because we manage it the way we do. And no... I don't want to share our mule deer with people from other provinces. It's one of the great benefits of living in Saskatchewan.

To OP, check out Wheat King adventures for a guided Mule deer hunt in Alberta. A few of my friends guide for them and have had awesome success. I believe Kip Fulks (former Under Armour CEO) has a podcast somewhere outlining his experience with them from last fall.
