Well, we still have the weight of winter apon us for about a month. This year coyotes have been a bust as my obligations have kept me at work most of the winter. I only had the chance to go out calling twice so far. The owner of the company I work for has had the threat of cancer looming over her head for a few months and I have picked up most of her tasks so that she can think of herself instead of others for awhile. This is all the scarier since she has been through it before.
So with spring around the corner dreams of little furry varmints are dancing through my head. These are some pics from 08 and I just hope 09 will be just as much fun.

Any others getting the itch for varmints?

I'm looking forward to shooting gophers once it warms up a little. I love sitting down in a good field with hundreds of moving targets and plenty of ammo.

Tell me about it, I have been depressed since September when the gophers stopped coming out to play.

Here are a few pics from last summer that may help.

Boom! Headshot!

What sort of rig are you shooting? Mine is a Kimber Classic .22 and a Savage 12 VLP in .204, our gophers are a lot smaller than your ground hogs but there are a lot of them.

How long does the shooting season last for ground hogs??

That Kimber is one sweet looking gun! Beautiful wood on it. I also am feeling the itch to go gopher shooting. My rigs:

oopswasthatyourdog, looks like there is a sasquatch in the creek picture (8th one).

The season usually lasts into July, after that it gets too hot and the grass gets too long to see them.

Boy does that bring back memories of a groundhogs who fell victim to my 7x57 mauser last summer. I'm really getting the itch, its so bad that the itch has migrated from my right finger down my wrist and is in my arm. Spring can't come soon enough.

Here is a link to the video from the previous picture, sorry about the quality but it was 30C and I had to use a tripod. This video is not dial-up friendly.

This is a picture of a groundhog who succomb to a 120gr. V-max out of the same gun.

Nice pics and video. I am itching to get out this year. I have a LPV in .223 on the way and a Sako Quad for my .22cal. I want to get a load developed with V-Max bullets before the snow is gone, but I doubt that will happen.

It's a custom 243 built around a Remington 600 action, it loves 80gr psp's and shoots like it has eyes of it's own. As you can see I prefer shooting sticks to a bipod. We just don't have as many groundhogs as you have Richardson's Ground Squirels out west so it is more of a hunt then a shoot. Lots of walking and spotting.
As INTIMIDATOR said by July the crops and grass are pretty high and the opportunities are fewer. I start blasting them as soon as they start to emerge from their burrows and the fields dry up a bit.

never noticed that....gonna return to see if I can be the first to "bag" one! :D

surfclod....how do you like your LPV?

Well KDX I gotta say that I really love it.

Its my first accurate rifle and I am hooked on trying to shrink groups and make longer and longer shots.

I got it in 05 after being out of regularly shooting/hunting for several years, prior to this I hunted with lever guns in bush country so never made any shots beyond 150 yards.

I know others have had good luck with Savages but I think I got extra lucky cause with factory Hornady 32 gr rounds it will shot 5/8-3/4 MOA consistently, (the odd 1/2 MOA when I have a good day). Over this winter I am upgrading my reloading equipment and have a Shilen barrel on order through Mysticplayer. I shaped the stock a little and installed a SAV-2 trigger on it as well recently. A bedding job and SSS recoil lug are gonna get attention pretty soon.

I am really excited to see what I can do after it is all ready.

This is how it is at around Christmas time.

Looks nice. I like what you've done with your stock. Where did you get that work bench? I need something like that for the basement. What does the SSS recoil lug do, or help?

I got the workbench out of a Buy as Sell paper or else an online service like Kijiji or Craigslist, I can't remember. Picked it up here in Calgary, I honestly don't know what brand it is, it was $50 if I remember right and I put a 1/4" aluminum top on it.

As for the recoil lug, this is what Sharp Shooter Supply have to say....
A must for any rebarrel job, the factory Savage lugs are stamped and tend to be distorted and are usually .007 - .010" thicker at the bottom than at the top. Our heavy duty Savage barrel lugs are made from .240" thick stainless steel, and are keyed to mate with the slot in the receiver to prevent turning. Available for both standard and large shank barrels.

I don't know if it is necessary but I was getting a barrel wrench from SSS anyways so I added it on.

I wondered if the claimed .007 - .010" thicker at the bottom than at the top would effect a bedding job so I figured I would skip McDonalds twice and that would save up enough money to pay for it.

I checked out that thread of yours on the stock mod and it is very good. I would be really hesitant to do it, but you made it look pretty easy. I can't wait to get my rifle. It has to come out of the States so it could be as long as 3 months. I ordered a Caldwell Fire Control rest and that should be here this week or next for sure.
