I've just put in a ramline stock on a rifle and lets face it the mold marks are just plain ugly. Any ideas of how I could dress this thing up. Has anyone spent some time sanding, painting etc. on these things. Tips and ideas greatly appreciated.

Ramline= Tupperware

The yare the same as any factory injection moded stocks.

There are several threads regarding painting these stocks, do a search under PAINTING or similar, you shoud turn up somehting

First sand the mold lines off with 120 grit paper, infact sand the entire stock. Get some good two part automotive body filler and fill in the ugly molded checkering. Sand with 120, 150 to a reasonable smoothness. Use Duplicolor primer/sealer and give the stock a few smooth even coats. Lightly sand and paint with a good quality automotive laquer from a spray bomb, or coat with a specialty spray to impart a allover rough surface, then paint or at least seal with a good clear spray. Viola a "custom' stock in about 12 hrs.

I put a Ramline stock on my Mark X .243 after looking for a good used original wood stock for a while.

Sand the mold marks with fine sandpaper. If done by hand, it sands just like wood. Then sand the whole stock lightly to blend in your sanding job. I used a dremel to give my sliding safety more clearance and to smooth out some sharp edges. Be very careful with the dremel, it will melt plastic pretty quick. Use a light touch if your're using one. I sanded down the ridge on the stock behind the receiver to a more rounded shape on my gun. Then finnish sanding everything by hand. Take your time and look everywhere for sharp edges or rough spots. I left the checkering alone, but sanded the little sharp bits around the edges very lightly. Wipe the gun down with a clean cloth and remove any cloth fuzz.

Hang the stock by a bent coathanger then get some Krylon Fusion plastic spray paint in flat black, or whatever color you like, and lightly spray it several times letting it dry between coats. Krylon Fusion plastic paint chemicaly fuses with plastic so it's not supposed to chip.

Your stock should come out looking very nice if you've taken the time to sand ALL the little mold marks and sharp edges. My rifle actually looks quite nice now, kind of tactical looking.

Hope this helps. John

The older Ramlines [back when they came with a Pachmayr declerator installed] must've been made nicer without the sharp edges +/or unsightly mould lines...:)

Got an older one on my Rem 788 & it's actually pretty nice "as is"... :cool:

Looks OK to me. I wiped out a '69 240Z at mile Zero in '79. Chip marks are still on the curb. :D Damned black ice. John

I've got one on my truck gun. I sanded out the mould marks, used Krylon Fusion as primer, Duplicolour truck bed liner paint as a base, added silver webbing paint and finished with Excel matte clear coat. It's not a McMillan but it works.
