i have a savage 1899 in 303 savage and would to put a scope on it, where can i get this done? rifle is far from a collector piece but still a good old hunting rifle, i can only hunt with a scoped rifle

Any competent gunsmith can do it. You don't say where you are. Give some indication of your location and I'm sure that guys will come on here and give you some names.

I've seen more than one bad D+T job using two piece bases. The issue is the rear screw holes are on the sloping part of the receiver, and need to be drilled at an angle to align the rear base properly. I would look for a one piece base, dont know if such a thing exists.

I have done one and two piece bases. One piece is easier. With two piece, the rear base must be located exactly right on the sloping surface. I do my drilling and tapping with a Forster jig. Really have to be careful to get the barreled receiver set up correctly in the jig. Not I job I enjoy doing. After setting the front base, use a straight edge on the tops of the bases to get the rear base in position, fore and aft.

Leupold make a one piece base for the Savage 99... I would suggest using that and a qualified gunsmith... it's a job easily screwed up... mailing a 99 with out the butt stock doesn't cost that much... base, rings and labour will probably run $200 is my guess. That rear hole can be a real problem drilling and tapping... it's right in the hard heat treated area of the action... and the base needs to set a bit high at the rear so the scope is pointing slightly downwards to the bore before drilling anything...

Since you are in a place with few or any competent Gunsmiths, a Machine Shop with an experienced Machinist may be able to help you out. Instead of Drilling on a Slope I would prefer using a endmill with the Receiver set up properly and firmly clamped in the Milling Vice.

Cheers

The machine shop with the experienced machinist also needs to have a federal firearms business license.... There may be some but I don't know of any.

Dennis knows of what he speaks. I've done a few and the last one couldn't be touched with even a carbide drill.

Why drill and tap?

Dig up a good Stith Streamline mount.

I think I have three sets of them here but not for sale right now. The rear mount attaches to the tang sight holes and the front mount uses the rear sight dovetail.

Oops, guns gone anyways.
