Drill & Tap 18.5" Maverick 88 Barrel?

I found a good deal on a Maverick 88 combo pack and I'd like to turn the 18.5" security barrel into a turkey barrel. I'd like to have it drilled and tapped for both chokes and a small section of Picatinny/Weaver rail for a red dot.

My concern is that there might not be enough meat on the barrel to do this as from what I understand the Mav has a thinner profile barrel than other Mossbergs.

Just wondering if someone here might have some experience doing this sort of thing?

You are better off probably just flipping the security barrel and buying a turkey barrel. Choke job will probably run you about ~150-200 bucks plus choke, I don't know if anyone will drill and a tap shotgun barrel for a pic rail, a standard D&T on the receiver will probably be another 200 plus the rail.

I'm essentially getting the 18.5" barrel for free and I can't find any turkey barrels for sale in Canada.

I'm definitely not buying anything Turkish.

You don't say where you are located, but Casey at TacOrd (tacord.com) does lots of choke installations and would be more than capable of mounting a pic rail on the receiver as well. I don't know what he charges now, but his prices have been very reasonable in the past.

Thanks, I'll take a look at him.

I did some more googling and apparently newer Mavericks use the same barrels as their 500 counterparts. I also might look at getting the barrel dovetailed instead of drilled and tapped for a rail. There are a few rails made to mount in the dovetail of a lever action rear sight that could work for my purposes.

I get it, but for the odd time you want to go turkey hunting with a securityshotgun, you could have one rattling around under the seat of your truck, youre going to spend 3-500 getting all the features of a turkish shotgun added to a 300 dollar gun and still have a 300 dollar gun.

All the stuff you're asking to add to your mav88 my 289.99 shotgun came with is all im saying

Wich sub model do you own? I was looking at the 301 pump tactical but i'm not sure if it will be reliable.

I have the FDE 301 tactical, when i first got it there was some hard/sticky racking of the pump, after a couple sessions it's nice and smooth now, no regrets, I actually replaced my maverick 88 with it.
