Need some info.

If I am drilling the side of a receiver for a scope mount, and none of the holes are going to end up anywhere near the chamber or barrel, do I need to worry about the holes going right through?

This is on a Savage 340a (30-30) and the mounting position is along the travel of the bolt. So when the bolt is closed the screws will be located along the bolt, no where near where they may be high pressure from firing like if they were drilled further forward at the side of the chamber.

Hope I'm explaining this properly.

Yes I am aware of mount screws going far enough in to affect bolt travel, but I think the screws will not be long enough, so as long as the inside of the holes are de-burred, there should be no issue.

Thanks

"so as long as the inside of the holes are de-burred, there should be no issue"

Yup.

Make sure you got a nice sharp bit. If there's a way to drill from the inside, I'd do that.

Try and match the location of the holes to be the same as on a factory tapped 340... deburring drill through is very easy...

Be careful with that Savage 340 receiver. It has a very hard surface. They can be difficult to center punch as well as drill and tap. If the holes aren't straight and positioned properly the issues created leave a lot to be desired.

Some of us are lucky and can use a milling machine with its movable table and vice to hold the barreled receiver and stiff centering/pilot drill to start the holes. It's also nice to use the mill to start the taps, without power of course.

A few years ago at the Kamloops gun show, a fellow had a set of adjustable trammels for sale that clamped to the receiver and allowed a person to position the guides exactly where they were needed. The thing about them was that the holes would only accept one size of drill and the bars were about a half inch (1cm) thick.

I wish I had bought that tool. It would have saved me a lot of time.

The factory holes on my 340 go right through the action. The screws for the Number 1 Weaver mount are made short enough to not bother the bolt. Same goes for the 14600 B-Square mount.
