Drilling holes in barrel

Would anyone know, is it possible to compensate a non-restricted barrel by drilling holes in it under the 18.5" mark?

A drill will leave burrs inside the barrel that aren't exactly easy to get off. In any case, the holes in a ported barrel need to be precisely angled and just the right size and shape. Put a brake on it. Mind you, there's no law one way or the other. Except that a brake doesn't count as part of the barrel's length.

That process is often done by electric machining to avoid burrs.

There are barrels made this way. Magnaporting can be done right through the rifling, it uses EDM to cut the holes. If the holes are drilled and reamed, it might be easier to ream out the rifling afterward. This doesn't alter the definition of barrel length.
