Drilling/tapping receiver for ghost ring/peep sights?

Hey folks,
I don't currently have a good shotgun and I'm looking to pick up one solid one to take care of any business a scattergun might be used for. Kind of set on picking up a Mossberg 500/590/Mav88 when the right deal comes up, but also considering an 870.

Looking to get a 18.5-20" smooth bore barrel so I can have an extended tube set flush with the end of the barrel and install ghost/peep sights for shooting slugs and buckshot. Ideally I would like to be able to take off the rear sight, change barrels over to a 26-28" and go bird hunting when needed (not often).

Just wondering how to go about getting that rear sight put onto a receiver that doesn't currently have a place for it, as regular ol bird guns come up quite often and any already "tactical" set ups seem to demand a premium.

Feel free to post pictures of your setups! Thanks!

Most Mossberg s come with the receiver tapped to accept a rail on the top of it and they’re pretty cheap, the front is more difficult.

you could get a barrel with rifle sights . my son has one mounted on an 870 and no it is not for sale. in my opinion it would be more accurate than mounting a sight on the receiver . best of luck whatever you choose .

Honestly, if I was planning on having the ability to swap between a shorter cylinder barrel for slugs/buck and a longer barrel for wing shooting; I would skip the receiver mounted sight and have a barrel with rifle sights.

A rifle sighted barrel is better if you want to swap barrels around, then you’re not stuck with the rear peep getting in the way while you have a longer vent rib or plain barrel with a bead on it.

I like rifle sights on a shotgun more than ghost rings, more of a personal preference as a good ghost ring works well.

Rem makes a 20” rifle sighted turkey barrel, smooth bore threaded for chokes. If you can find one they’re great.

That all makes sense to me, so then I guess my next question would be - Does anyone know where a guy might find a smoothbore mossberg 500 barrel with rifle sights on it? Or do they even make them?
Also, it would be easy to switch from rifle sights over to a ghost/peep, correct? I've pretty much only ever shot rifles with optics so messing with different sights is new to me.
Thanks guys.

That link to Epps doesn't work now, but here is a SG combo - http s://ellwoodepps.com/mossberg-500-combo-field-deer-rifle-sights-272325.html

If you found a ghost sight that went on a weaver rail then its only 4 little screws to remove the rail with the ghost site on it. I have a scope in qd rings and take the rail on and off my mossberg 535 several times a year depending on what i use it for. Replacing the rail and putting the scope rings back in the same slots keeps my patterns centered
Plain mossberg barrels come up often. You could solder on rifle sights and cut to preferred length easily enough. If not there are plenty of short turkey barrels available with fiber optic sights or cantilever bases if you wish to stay with an optic
