Are there any disadvantages of prefit/drop in barrels? (Shilen, for savages) vs having someone start fresh from a blank?

I'm new to this part guys, please go easy. :D

I have shot both styles and they both can work very very well.

See the 6mmbr.com link in my sigline for my other projects.

For the Savage, there is no benefit either way. The only advantage with a shoulder headspaced barrel is the ability to use a larger profile. This can be useful if shooting a larger cartridge in F class where you barrel gets super hot.

If going barrel nut headspace, you can install yourself and can change barrels whenever you want. Saves quite a bit in the install labour over a few barrels.

Scroll to the videos on the bottom of the 1st post and you can see what some prefit Shilens are doing on my FTR rifles.

Unfortunately, I can't blame the equipment anymore.... :)

the most attractive part about this whole thing.

Jerry, Thanks, Email inbound.

Prefits can take up to 6 months to get in. Having someone chamber a blank for you can save lots of time. I order blanks in savage profiles all the time and chamber as needed, still uses a bbl nut. Its not hard to swap either out though.

Getting a pre fit takes time. But they are good.

Getting a blank chambered and threaded for your savage gives you lots more choice of barrel makers. Thats the first big thing and the other is it saves lots of time.

If you can go to one guy for your barrel blank and have him do quality work prepping it then thats the way to go.

There are lots of good dealers on CGN but I would recommend JuanValdez.
I know if you deal with North Shore barrels a time or two you will quickly appreciate that he's a good guy.

But call around, PM dealers, get prices, get wait times, and make your own mind up.

I guess if you have to ask, the answer is no, but I order all my reamers and i get them made for what i shoot. I shoot mostly single shot stuff and thus I like a match spec chamber with the throat for bullets that work the best, and minimal neck clearance for the brass I use/turn.

It is easier when swapping out an old barrel to use the reamer you used before on the new barrel. The whole reason headspace gauges are made is to make sure the new chamber is cut for the actioin you're using. Never used those Savage nut things, but seems like they'd be a pain to head space when switching barrels.

Guess its all about what you want to use your gun for.
