Here's a bit of a "head-scratcher"! I picked this up as part of a lot at an estate auction. I'd originally dismissed it as probable cheap tin "drum" canteen, but in doing some research, I'm not too sure now. I can't find any marks or stamps on it, the cork stopper is missing, and the buckle looks too new in style to be an antique, but I'm putting a shout out to my fellow gunnies to ask for any knowledgeable input. Check it out.
I'm wondering if the canteen itself is civil war period, and the strap was replaced as well as chain for the stopper added. I'd initially dismissed it as cheap thing but I'm doing more research on some civil war specialist sites.
