Hi guys! I want to rip out my 10 Ibs. trigger in my Rem 700 and adjust it
to more acceptable level. My question is can I dry fire this rig to check
trigger poundage without damaging the firing pin. Thanks in advance.

It has been done about a billion times without any problems. When trigger weight is checked in fullbore competition, chambers are check to make sure they are clear. The bolt is then closed and the trigger weight lifted, once this is done the trigger is pressed on an empty chamber to ensure the rifle was cocked. I have only see one person insert a snap-cap with the RO's permission to test his trigger.

Generally you shouldn't dry fire the rifle. Do as J Stuart said, use a spent shell or a snap cap.

The type of damage from dry firing can be broken firing pin, chipped firing pins, damaged springs, or the impact (many times) can cause a burr the inside of the bolt. Bad news either way.

The probability of damaging a firing pin in a modern centre fire firearm by dry firing is very small.

As a target shooter and hunter for many years, I dry fire all the time to practice trigger pull and never ran across a firing pin problem.

In your case where you will only do it a couple of times, I would not worry about it for a second keeping in mind that the worse that can happen is breaking the pin - a relatively inexpensive repair.

PS. There are many pros and cons on the internet dealing with dry firing with a wide range of views but I like the following:

Dry firing is the practice of "firing" a firearm without ammunition. That is, to pull the trigger and allow the hammer or striker to drop on an empty chamber.
This technique is often used to simulate actual firing when there is not a suitable place to practice with live ammunition. The primary benefit of this practice is refined trigger control. For most common cartridges, there are snap caps available to reduce the risk of damaging the firing pin. It is generally acceptable to dry fire more modern centerfire firearms without a cartridge or snap cap. However, dry firing a shotgun or rimfire firearm can damage the firing pin. Furthermore, damage can occur to the chamber mouth of a rimfire firearm.
Dry firing may also refer to the firing of a bow or other weapon without ammunition.

Yep - never a problem about a million times for me.

What can go wrong? The firing pin doesn't strike anything - it's a centerfire, right? You think the inertia of the pin is going to damage it when it stops? - never. It's built for the range of motion it goes through. When it's fired with a live round in the chamber it gets to see 40,000+++ CUP of pressure.

If it breaks when it's dry fired, it was going to break anyway.

x10 + a billion

I wonder how many billions of dry-firing and action cycles I've done? Many of those were with 700s. I did manage to break one firing pin in all that time, and it wasn't in a bolt action and was less than a year old. Probably a flaw. I sure wouldn't worry about the few dry fires that setting a trigger entails.

ehh? whats wrong with dry-firing a bolt-action centerfire?
what exactly are you going to damage? the entire firing pin assembly on a 700 costs around $40 to replace in the absolute worst case, and unless it was defective to begin with you wouldnt damage it from dry-firing it thousands of times. that $40 is actually on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of replacement -- many brand's firing pins and springs are only $5-10.

if anything, you could actually help smooth the trigger and action on a new bolt-action centerfire by cycling/dry-firing it a couple hundred times.

btw darkman - which Remington trigger do you have?
does it have the old trigger or the new X-Mark?

Old trigger:

X-mark

AFAIK the X-mark should be the same method of adjustment but uses a 1/16 allen key to do so, you might want to doublecheck though and look for a how-to specifically dealing with the X-Mark.

i prefer the old ribbed trigger but the new X-Mark is stainless and IMO is a welcome improvement over the old rust-magnet Remington triggers.

i have always dry fired my brownings, shotgun and a-bolts tons. even though advised against it. have yet to have a problem. but if something goes wrong in the field i'll sure be kicking myself as i have been warned. i was going to start using a spent case as precaution but having brass in the chamber dryfiring in the basement freeked me out.

we should have a poll. how many guys dryfire newer centerfire rifles and how many have had pin failure.

one of the first things i do after cleaning/lubing a new factory rifle (i always thoroughly disassemble and clean them - ive had some arrive with blasting media, filings, etc in them) is to sit down and cycle the action a couple hundred times and dry fire it, just to break it in and smooth it up a little. i have yet to have a firing pin break.

i honestly dont think snap caps do that much. the polymer primered snap caps, IMO, only provide a minimal cushion for the firing pin.
the spring-loaded solid brass primered one will eventually develop a deep divot after just a few dozen dry-firings that will almost mimic a spent primer, as the brass flows away from each pin impact... so they tend to lose their firing pin 'cushioning' effect. i think snapcaps are overrated for anything other than practicing fast reloading - or at least the Pachmayr and A-zoom ones that i have tried. if there is some other, superior design i am all ears.

Billions??

The way our governments talk about spending billions of our dollar, we tend to forget how big a billion is!
How many billion times have you recycled your action? If you recycled it once a second, it would take 277,000 hours to get it to a billion!
At the rate of once a second for ten hours a day, you could get to a billion recycles in 923 months.
This is the way we should think of a billion, when it refers to a billion dollars wasted on the gun registry!!

Doesn't all apply to us in Canada, but informative.

WHAT IS A BILLION?

It's hard not to get depressed while reading this. It's time politicians themselves got a reality 'check' instead of always asking for our 'cheque'!!

What is a 'billion'?
Now here's a reality check!
This is too true to be very funny.

The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of its releases.

A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were Living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and
20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans. It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu , is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number, what does it mean?

A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington, D.C ., Ottawa, Canada.... HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

Tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.

If he cries,
Tax his tears.

Tax his bills,

Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, Tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.

Tax his coffin, Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom!'

And when he's gone, We won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!!

sweet jesus. on that topic IMO if you choose to settle in a place below sea level that is highly susceptible to tropical storms, get insurance.
and if even someone in ONTARIO like me (who doesnt even watch TV), knows a hurricane is coming days in advance and everyone is telling you to evacuate, and you dont, then too bad. suck it up, buttercup.

now how did a conversation about dry-firing turn into one about Louisiana? :)

with regards to the old remmy trigger - rust magnet was an understatement.

i just took it out of my safe and WTF!? :runaway:, theres rust on the triggergroup again. only time i ever take this rifle out is for varminting on sunny days. its like it spawns rust :(

I have dry fired my Remingtons Thousands of times without incident. Since I adjust all my own triggers, sometimes a trigger adjustment alone means about 40 cycles or more. Only firing pin I ever broke was a M100 Winchester, and there was a recall on them. Regards, Eagleye.

I find the same thing with my remingtons. They are always in my gun cabinet and I always have to oil them. They are the only guns that seem to want to GROW rust. I have a bunch of Savages and they seem to be rust repellent. I oil them and they just dont rust.
