Does anyone dry fire the 858 for practice? Do you use snapcaps?
The manual does not say anything either way. There seems to be a wide variety of recommendations re-dry firing anything. E.g. the Glock you can dryfire till the cows come home...
if one is paranoid about dry firing, ppl told me you can insert a wooden dowel from the muzzle end all the way to the face of the bolt. pull the trigger and let the firing pin strike on the dowel.
"...you can dryfire till the cows come home..." You can dry fire any center fire until the cows come home. It's good practice for sight picture and trigger control.
If you have a reloading press or a buddy with one, It is better to practice with dummy rounds. this will provide you with reloading mags, stripper clips, etc. to provide you with "practice makes perfect". If you are practicing dry fire then you should be also practicing reload and rapid fire.
Some very respected authorities recommend that majority of one's shooting practice should be dry fire, *not* live ammo. Thus there is a very good reason to dry fire.
When I used to shoot clays, dry firing a 12 gauge was considered a no-no...
