I spoke with DSA regarding the importation of one of their STG-58 firearms.
I was told that there has been an export order in place since Bill CLinton's administration restricting the export (from the US) of military firearms.
Any comments from anyone on the validity of this statement? If so, why can I buy an Armalite etc?

Chris,
I have been persuing this ever since my beautiful, FN produced semi-auto FAL was declared prohib by the feds. The registry people admitted that mine was one of 50 semi-autos produced by the factory - it took almost 14 months to come to this determination - but it was still legislated as prohib.
The current (bound to change at a whim) interpretation is that as a full semi-auto and not a conversion and with no FAL / LAR markings the DSA variant complies as a non-restricted, barrel length permitting of course.
Go figure.

DSA STG58 are FAL type firearms, prohib. I'm almost certain you can't get one even if someone were able to import them.

Yup, they are the are a variant of the FN-FAL so they are Prohibited firearms in Canada. Which is a shame......:(

you fail to understand the concept of prohibition by name versu the one by features FAL are prohibited by name there is nothing one can do to them to de-prohibit them unlike let say a mg34 wich is not named and is only prohibited because its full auto, so a feature change can change its class.

There was a hell of a lot more than 50 FALs manufactured as semi-auto's. Like has been said, it's a prohibition by name for the semi FALs including variants like C1s the DSAs, class 12(5).

FA and CA FALs fall into 12(2) and 12(3) prohib classes.

I have a 1969/1970 SIR catalog that shows new Browning built FAL's for sale - of course, semi only....ohhh would they be a beaut!

Hello all,

I'm not trying to be difficult, but the 50 I was referring to where manufactured by FN Herstal (sp?) in Belgium. Not license or non license built items from other factories / countries.

The prohib section reads:
"The firearm of the design commonly known as the FN-FAL (FN-LAR) rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the FN 308 Model 44, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Competition Auto, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Heavy Barrel 308 Match, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Paratrooper 308 Match 50-64 and FN 308 Model 50-63."

I appreciate the impact "of the design commonly known as..." but I don't necessarily want to discard a statement by the CFC out of hand.

I guess the validity of my first post will be in whether I can register one or not.

Thanks for the feedback.

Regards,

Maxim

Maxim,

You are not offending anyone, but the wording is clear. Many people on this board own FAL's and have explored every possibility of getting them un-prohibited: there is none.

Also, I would question your 1 in 50 claim. I know of at least 3 people with Belgian made semi auto FAL's.
