DSSMatch 2018

Another pic to show just how nasty a day it was, and these instructors do this for nothing, to roll out of bed in this weather, to teach a course you are not paid for, just to promote a sport speaks to the quality of these guys, if you have been on the fence take the plunge and get out to Dssmatch!!

Hmmmm I work next weekend (and I'm currently sleeping in science world...) but I'm thinking I want to get in on the action next time I can...

What sort of things do we have to pay for? Ammo of course, but what about CASE, membership with dss, range fees for shoots...?

It's just $50 for the CASE course itself. Any gear you have can help (gloves, knee pads, good shoes/boots, equipment to hold magazines), but you can do the CASE in regular pants/shirts/sweaters and store magazines in your pockets - the CASE is about safety not speed. Range fees are included in any CASE or Match fee. Info on the CASE and upcoming courses (the announced ones are sold out atm) https://www.dssmatch.com/qualifier

Once you have passed the CASE, it's a $25/year membership to DSS Match, and $30-40 a match ($10 more for matches with extras [bbq, binary targets, etc..]).

Thanks that gives me an idea of what I need to budget to be part of this.

How much ammo gets used in an average shoot?

CASE uses about 150 rds. DSS has grown in membership ranges. There are 1-3 gun matches coming up this year. Combine round count is usually around 160 rds/ match if you’re perfect. This is with One and 2 Gun. Not sure how the 3 G ones will go yet until the stages get designed.

PS when you’re budgeting, please get a modern ergonomic rifle if you don’t own one yet. Anything semi auto will work but running a SKS even Tapcoed out with 10 rd mags puts you at a disadvantage.

Yeah, currently my biggest draw back is the lack of a suitable rifle. I'm interested in that new 180b-type rifle wolverine recently announced, but I need to get a real job before I can budget the $1000+ needed to get a reasonable rifle (I know I could get a cheap AR for less, but I'd rather something NR if it's only a difference of $200-300) Currently the only semi rifle I own is a bone stock sks.

You can take CASE with the SKS. There’s a lot of fumbling with the clips and the safety by the trigger can be a huge problem if you’re not careful. However, lots of people pass with the SKS. It’s about safety, not speed.
The new Wolverine rifle will be great. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a few of those at TAC matches when they become readily available, since there will be no real gear change for most participants.

We've had guys do quite well with stock SKS. Tape the stripper clips to 5 rounds and attach a length of split garden hose to make the strippers easier to grab quickly. Stow them in an open dump pouch and you're gtg! Biggest drawback on the SKS is lack of easy/good options to mount a RDS. I quickly learned irons are a huge disadvantage when I shot a Tac Match with my SP1 for giggles!!
