Dual Fuel

I've use lots of 4895 & H4895 in my AR & M305 reloads. Lots of data out there, I say go for it. Varget is like an improved version, but can be hard to get as it is very popular.
 
Just a friendly reminder, don't use varget in an M14 type of rifle. It's too slow. For reloading in a M14 type rifle, use IMR4895, H4895, or IMR4064. They have the correct burn rates for the gas assembly to function correctly. Refer to Reloading for the M14 by Zediker. Google it, really easy to find.
 
Yes I learned all that the hard way! I bought an M1A and then learned AFTER I bought it that they were very picky about what they like to eat! I went into it thinking that reloading for an M14 was the same as any bolt gun. Lord I love my M14... but it beats the bejeebers out of it's brass, and is a very finicky eater...!!!

After I found all that out I couldn't buy powder because everyone was pretty much out...but I did manage to snarf an 8 pounder from Higginsons. Sure would be nice to have one powder for everything...

I have had 'powder diversity' shoved squarely up my butt sideways! Good grief - I'm sure I have at least 20 different powders down there - some full, a few with maybe a couple hundred grains...some of them are years old too! I know for a fact I have a couple pounds of unopened BL-C2 down in the dungeon but I can't find it! It probably rolled under the old lady's dryer or hard up against the furnace, no doubt...

Hmmmm...what gives? I hang out with the gun geeks at the M14 forum and they gave me a semi-official list of 'approved powders' for the M14:
IMR4895
H4895
IMR4064 (I got some of that too!)
AA2495BR
And maybe IMR3031

I thought BL-C2 was THE official military gunpowder for the US military in their .30 cal guns? If I am reading the burn rate chart correctly, BL-C2 is too slow for the big M14. What gives? I do know I have burned it in all my mouse guns with un-spectacular results...(which probably explains why I have two or three bloody cans of it!!! Goddammit!!!!)

Say - are any of you boys hankerin' to try a powder but too cheap to buy a full can of it? We should set up a barter deal or something...I sure would like to get rid of a few of these orphan cans of gun powder...
 
BL-C2 will work just fine in 308. Basically it is the equivalent of 4895 in a ball powder. Win 748 will work in 223, 308, and '06 for Semi Auto use as well.

I know its heretical but I've had no problems with Varget in my M305's. IF I do blow one up I'll send you all the recoverable parts. Promise.
 
you won't blow up an M14 with Varget. What can happen is increased wear on the oprod. It's more critical in a Garand imho because it is easier to bend the long oprod, as well as easier to rapidly wear the bolt lug slot on an M1 oprod. The M14 has a shorter stiffer rod and the roller to mitigate some risk. Still... you are asking for increased wear and tear.
