Duck boats..

I don’t have pictures handy of my old boat. The best all around duck boat I ever had was
a 16 foot Lund SSV with a 30hp on the back. That boat hunted simcoe to long point to eastern Ontario and lake Nippissing as well as Huron and Georgian bay. It did most things well. You could not go easily through the skinniest of water but it still got me into some pretty shallow marsh. I also used it as a layout tender from time to time. It was amazing in rough weather and I always felt safe. I owned a Jon boat before that was never dry and always felt sketchy hunting on some of the bigger water. For an all around boat in Ontario the SSV would get a close look from me if I ever where in the market again. I think Starcraft also has a deep V utility/duck boat as well that would be worth a look. My advice, don’t get stuck on the idea of a Jon unless all you hunt is skinny water. Ontario isn’t Louisiana! I eventually sold mine as I don’t hunt ducks much anymore. I have a semi deep V 14 now that does double duty as my small water fishing rig!

I have home built 8' Jon boat that I use for fishing smaller lakes. It is great for that and would probably be great for a duck boat on similar waters. As meatsticks mentioned, it does not handle choppy water well. I would not take it out on Simcoe, maybe Couchaching on a calm day.

Duck boat

I build a top like a cedar strip canoe, cover with fiberglass. It has build in shelf to store my ammo, thermos and a small butane stove to cook breakfast. Also it has cup hooks to hang my 50 decoys. The boat is 14-1/2 with a 20 hp Merc. The picture show the boat in light blue but I painted it brown since. Handle choppy water very well on Mississippi Lake and the hard side give good shelter on those windy days. Once I put out my decoys, throw anchor and throw camouflage netting over the side. Pour my coffee and wait for sunrise.

I no longer own this but I had an Avery pop up blind that mounted to it via brackets that fit the versa-trak gunwales. No drilling holes or permanent mounts. Lift it on/off in under two minutes and out of the way to fish. The minn-kota was on a quick detach mount too. Took only seconds to remove it and nothing left in the way either. I sold it because I quit hunting water after moving to Alberta......

Buddy and I built this 14ft a few years ago. Three sheets of plywood, flat bottom, rated for a 10hp.

This is the Scott 16' Deep Duck Boat, built a surround blind and run a 15 h.p on it... light, easy to pushpole in the Reed beds... easy to get it into action on retrieves and cripples... drive into weed bed, drop bow anchor, position boat, drop rear anchor, lift blind... done. And vice versa to go.
