Getting back into duck hunting after 30 years, Are the 12FT trackers (Bass Pro) any good. Will be in Calgary and thought I'd haul one back. Is there a better place to look?

I went with a Jon boat, a 1440M from Lowe (actually made by Princecraft). The M stands for modified bow. I chose this model because it's 202 lbs and can still be manhandled down to a lake by 2 guys if it's not to far... Done that for trout fishing... The next size up & there is no way two guys are manhandling it, it'd be trailering only...

My boat, with a 9.9 HP Honda, will do just under 40 km on flat water with two adults & the dog... With decoys, guns, dog & two guys, it still gets up onto plane no problem. I don't think it would be able to do that with another guy though...

I like the Jon boats because they are so stable. But, if it's rough water where you hunt, then I'm not sure that the Jon boat is the way to go UNLESS you go with a much bigger boat than the 1440M I have. When it's rough out, I have to take it easy in my boat...

Cheers
Jay

If you go with a jon I wouldn't recommend anything under 14 feet.... a quick look at the weight restrictions on the 12 and 10 footers will tell you why....

I wanted a cheap backwater setup last year so I bought a rough little 12 foot aluminum on kijiji for under 100 bucks and repaired and painted it up myself.... I push it around with a 6 horse suzuki and it moves ok.... whole package repaired painted and all with trailer cost me about 700....

Superbad, what type of paint did you use. I have tryed different paints but it seems to peel on my boat.

First you have to rough sand the aluminum.... then you use black rust paint as a base.... I used armour coat the CDN Tire brand.... then the rest was all Krylon Camo spray cans sprayed through stencils.... The key to not having it peel is the rough sand and base coat.....

Thanks Superbrad, I painted my boat with military paint and it peeled after one season. so i will try your way.

Yes the quality of the trackers is fairly decent. Prices are good too. You have to ask yourself how and where you are going to hunt. If you are going small waters that don't get too rough a Jon would be the way to go. They are stable to stand and shoot in and draft very shallow for getting in to skinny water. If you have to ride distances though and the chance of rough water rides is there then I would go Deep V. Personally I am running a 1546DS Triton. Tough as hell, Mod V design. Not as stable to stand and shoot in as a regular Jon but beats a regular V hands down for shooting out of and they go in shallow places a regular V couldn't dream of getting into.
