Hey All;

The last two evenings have really opened my eyes when it comes to hunting small little water holes! I have shot 8 ducks in this beaver pond and two of them have been banded black ducks!!! The ducks have been a mix of mallards, blacks and one wood duck... The first hunt was me and a friend, last night I hit the spot by myself.

As you'll see from the pics, I use a camoflaged 10 foot flat bottom boat that I easily load and unload by myself and gets into even the shallowest water... I do get ALOT of puzzled looks with it riding on top of my Chevy Tracker, but hey, IT WORKS!!!

This spot is a small beaver pond and has two active beaver huts... The first evening, having never hunted the spot before, I simply sat on the hut. I quickly found that the ducks were screaming in from behind me, so the second evening, I set up facing the hut, about 20 meters away from the hut, and BOY, did that work. I simply sat in the center of the pond on some logs and put out 6 decoys! I found it easier to shoot as I had more time to see the ducks coming and was standing on solid ground!!!

The shooting was fun as the ducks would fly by, looking for a spot to roost and hear my calls. They would then circle, see the decoys and come screaming in to the pond. They really do look like fighter jets with their wings locked and dropping from the sky!!!

In short, I would say to anyone looking for a good evening shoot, "Look at small ponds more carefully and with a couple of decoys, you can have a hell of a shoot!" All 8 of these puddle ducks were taken in the last hour of light. That makes for some quick, fast action!!!

Me and my buddy are going to let the pond "rest" till next tuesday, I don't want to pressure this spot too hard. Our guess is that the migrating ducks will keep hitting this pond till it's frozen, YAHOO!!!

Cheers
Jay

The "spot"... You can see my boat, decoys and the hut I sat on. The second hut is to my left out of the pic about 20 meters. Like I said, it's NOT a big spot...

The 4 ducks I shot, two mallards and two black ducks, one of which is banded! It is the second duck from right.

I love the top pic with the boat and your 4x4!!

I am still figuring out how to put mine on the top of my XL7

Grouse Man, It's made out of pcv pipe!!! I just knew "what" I wanted and cut and frigged with it for several hours and presto, I have a "A" frame blind I can sit in if there is no spot/cover... The netting is zap strapped to the pcv piping...

Farmboy, The boat fits nicely on top of the tracker, just tie her down like a canoe!!!

Cheers

P.S. Anyone notice the dog in the second pic? I left her in the truck as she is a pointer and a pain in the ass in the duck blind... She comes along to find the wounded ones, of which there were none last night, and only comes out when the shooting is done... She is pure murder on upland game though... Bamma was pretty upset at being left behind and barked every time I shot!

Jay that looks like a great spot, hard to find em in our neck of the woods eh!!, we should get together for a shoot some night, i found a real nice swwet spot in Maugerville that a farmer gave me the rights and passage to 1700 acres, on which there is a large DU dyke system there that are just overflowing with birds, me and a buddy went in on weds night, we got 5 greenwing teal and 2 mallard hens, no bands yet this year though!! =(
we should talk and maybe do a switch shoot , i take you to my spot and i go with you, if intrested drop me a line and ill call you, i still got your # from the dehydrator purchase, only tried it once so far with a small load of my spring bear and it was great, soon ill do up a batch of this years moose and somemore bear =)=)=),

chow,

Ryan

SuperCub, I would have, but the battery gave me trouble last season and I returned it to the gun dealer... I am SURE the robo-duck would be PURE MURDER in this spot!!! I so wish I had one now...

P.S. Ryan... We will have to talk... Anytime after 6pm weekdays and anytime on weekends is good...

Hollow Point, I bought the boat 3 years ago, it is a Nalco 10 foot flat bottom boat made in the 70's roughly. It had a large orange strip down the side and my wife painted the boat with Krylon camo system spray paint from Crappy Tire. She's the artist, not me... The boat saw very little use from the previous owner and it sure has been put through it's paces with me. I originally bought the boat, not for the boat, but for the motor, a 3 hp Mercury that was NEW... The motor always starts on the 1st or 2nd pull... The boat was technically "free" with the deal and I realized what a score I had made when I tried the sucker out duck hunting!!!
