Well the plan was made for a 6 a.m. start, ... at 5 a.m. there was thunder and lightning every few seconds,.. we weren't about to let that stop us..

SV7772 showed with a Tim's coffee from the city..I pulled on my gear, grabbed the dekes and we were off...

Before getting the dekes out, down at the waters edge, I managed 4 birds with three shots,..now admittedly, I jumped them and was ready for the shooting,.. SV7772 can tell you why he didn''t shoot if he chooses:D:D:D

We put out the decoys and settled into the reeds and cattails.. the lightning had me a tad nervous, but I figured I was wearing rubber boots, I'll be OK:eek:;):redface: The action was quite good, ...lots of birds on the move, all locals though,

Derek took two that were pretty damn fine shots by any measure... and we ended the day with about 16 ducks and a goose,...Derek took the Goose. Hit it three times and still had to finish it. When he went into the cattails after it, it sounded and looked like the goose was ready for a UFC match... but as the saying goes,..don't bring a goose bill and wings to a gunfight!;)

Breasted out, cleaned up and eating a snack at home by 11 a.m.

A great morning !

Yup, I scored a nice fat hen this Morning, it was fun. I got to my pond really late. (Because I had to drive all over trying to buy a permit because some son-of-a-***** decided you can't buy the waterfowl stamp at regular issuers anymore, rotten, good for nothing *******) When I arrived I put on my waders, put the Browning together and stuffed my pockets with shells. I walked out to the pond and figured I'd know where they were sitting because of the strong West wind. I spotted a large, mixed group on the far end do I started out. I litterally had to crawl on hands and knees to get past all those eyes staring in my direction between a few bare spots between the tree's. When I got to where I figured I could shoot from I moved into the cattails as far as I could without sinking. The plan was to spook them up without giving away my position. Then I knew they would take off into the wind and pass over land where I could make a good retrieve. I tossed the clump of dirt carried in but they didn't flush. I tossed a couple more things into the spot where I thought they were but nothing. I moved in closer and they had swam further to my right. I had nothing left to toss so I called out, but they didn't flush, they started to swim away and they now knew where I was. I figured what they Hell and jumped up, spooking them to the sky. I had to wait for them to clear the tree's at about 40 yards before I felt good to shoot. I missed the first bird, a big Pintail drake I was watching. My second shot took out the big hen and my third shot must of winged the drake because he flinched for a second when I pulled the trigger. Unfortunatly the hen tumbled right when a big gust came up and dropped her back on the waters edge. By the time I got to where she hit she had already drifted out past wading range. However she was in a spot where the wind swirled so I just had to wait until she came in close enough for me to walk out and grab her. That was the only oppertunity I had, but I'm happy. That was the first blood the new shotgun has on it and my first group of birds of the year. I may head out again Tonight if I'm up to it. I love this time of year.

Here are a few snaps from that morning

Red sky in the morning, all sailors take warning... and this was good and true by the rain lightning and thunder we had, ..it;s about 6 a.m.

Well, no pics as I forgot the camera in the truck.

We were hoping to do some pass shooting between two ponds, but no luck. We watched a couple hundred geese head out of one pond and decided they would likely come back along the same path. Sure enough, about 10 minutes of legal light left here they come low over the stubble due to the wind. Most of the flock veered downwind but a couple came in about 20 yards off the deck. Picked up a big greater on the second shot. While the dog was retrieving it a small flock of widgeon came over and I managed a hen.

Hunting partner got one hen mallard just before the geese came over.

Better then getting skunked.
