Who is going out for the duck opener this Saturday? Are you changing up any plans or tactics from last year? There were several hundred ducks around when I was at my spot for the goose opener, so I hope I have good luck this weekend. ;)

I tend to wait until October some time before I start chasing ducks. I try to shoot drakes only and it's easier to pick them out a little later. To each their own. Good luck to everyone

I usually head down to Matchedash Bay for,the southern opener. This year, I won't make it as I am currently under the weather with a lingering case of the plague and attendant fatigue. If I feel more energetic over the weekend, I will likely take a short walk for grouse. Nevertheless, good luck to all venturing afield on Saturday.

A few weeks have passed since then.you may want to go scouting before opening day and make sure birds are still using the spot or it could be a long sit watching empty skies. Ducks and Geese are famous for here today gone tomorrow once seasons start. A few goose hunts in the area can blow the ducks out too.

That was exactly my experience at a local pond...lots of ducks during early goose, and then zero birds of either type for the general opener.

My group saw many ducks out this morning. There must have been 40-50 hunters with in 500 M of our position (the goose opener was very quiet in comparison). The road leading to the hunting area was like a parking lot at 530am. Every time ducks came within range came by it sounded like the beginning of Private Ryan ;) We got 2 ducks. The geese were smart and stayed out of dodge. It was my wife's first time duck hunting, and firing a firearm outside of a range. She did well. :)

Not a very productive day for me. I dropped a four ducks, but was only able to successfully retrieve 2 of them, a mallard and a blue wing teal. Two mallards were lost. There were also far too many inexpericenced shooters around that dont understand that shotguns will not drop birds at 100+ yards and all that does is educate birds to never come back to our decoys and calls. I was also shot at while retrieving a bird and so far have found 12 bb's in my boat to keep as a reminder that i was shot at. We were also paid a visit by the local CO and OPP officer. Its already the second time this year getting visited by the authorities. They were happy everything was in order and provided valuable info on the problems being caused by some of the jackoffs on the lake. All in all a great day out, but just not enough birds in the boat that im usually used to.

I had a few pellets bounce off my back from guys shooting through the reeds. It is unnerving to to hear them skittering around you.

Sounds like heaven!!

I do not miss hunting southern or central Ontario one bit for waterfowl with the exception of Great Lakes divers in late fall. There's something about big water hunting that is just plain cool. We hunted a pea field on the AB side this morning. Never saw or heard another hunter or shot and saw thousands and thousands of birds. It was my first day out this year and I brought home a few lesser Canadas and a few mallards and had a great morning with friends watching the show called "Migration".

I just heard the push was on out there, we had a pile move in the last few days. always nice to see new birds hit the area. Some day I'll find my way out to paradise...Even if it is only for a few days it'll happen. Gotta get a nice bar belly. Ontario isn't getting any less crowded with people. Opening day had scatter guns roaring all over the place

I'll be going this weekend on cooks bay in my buddies backyard. Seems to be a popular spot. All he hears from dawn to dusk is shotguns. I have no idea what to expect.

Was out for the the opener. Dropped one mallard about five minutes after open. Unable to retrieve due to long grass. Good excuse to start shopping for a dog. Had a couple small flocks fly past out of range then nothing all day. Such is life. Was hunting in the Wallenstein area. Heading back out Monday evening with hopefully better luck.

If anyone is in the KW Guelph area and wanta a tag along give me a shout. Always game to ditch the suit and tie and wear the waders.
