Ok, so I am thinking some time in the summer, I am going to purchase a 700P in 308. When I go to mount the scope, should I get a regular weaver base? I plan on shooting at 600+. Also what does a 20 MOA base do? I know its a dumb question, I am just getting into the precision rifle game.

Depends on the scope and rings you want to use. A 20 MOA base tilts the scope in such a way as to allow you to use less of your scopes internal elevation adjustment to get on target at longer (over 600) range. With some scopes, and a regular mount, you can't get enough elevation adjustment to compensate for bullet drop at the longer distances, hence the tilted or angled mounts available. You can also do the same thing with regular Weaver bases and Burris insert rings (which can be had in various thicknesses to do the same thing as the angled 20 MOA mount). - dan

Buy a Picatinney Spec base. This is pretty much the standard as most militaries use Picatinney bases/mounts.

Look at the following bases:

-Near (Canadian Made)
-TPS (the best Value)
-Badger Ordnance
-Ken Farrell

A 20 MOA base is a tapered (angled) base that will give you an added 20 MOA of adjustment for your scope.Tapered bases come in a variety of MOA tapers.

I run a Near 25 MOA tapered Picatinney base on my AI-700 and it is top notch.

SKBY.

Even if you are not planning to shoot beyond 600m now, you may in the future, and could be screwing yourself if you go with a non-tapered base.
I'm guessing you will likely zero at 100m regardless, so a tapered base is win-win. Why handycap yourself?

I use plain old Weaver bases and Weaver or Warne rings. This might be because I don't know any better and perhaps it's just good luck that they have worked OK for me. Regards, Bill.

Near Mfg, have two and wouldn't have any other kind. You get what you pay for and they are no more expensive than Badger Ordnance, the so called top of the heap. I have had both and like Near's Base better than Badger Ordnance.

The only time you need to use a 20 MOA base is if you bought a scope that does not have enough elevation adjustment and in these are found in the lower end scopes and in scopes that feature 1/8 MOA adjustments .Leeper Shoots out to 900m's with his rifle in F class .I have yet to run out of adjustment when I have shot at targets out past 1000m with my rifles
