Hey all,

I'm installing a Boyds stock tonite. It came with no hardware whatsoever, so as a result I'm going to have to transplant the front swivel from my Nork stock over to the Boyds.

Where in the GTA/Mississauga can you find the correct type of rivets and a tool set (Anvil and punch) to correctly set the rivets?

I had the same problem... I "harvested" the norinco one and used some small bolts with a rivet "looking" head... I used loctite to hold them there securely... It did take a little fiddling to get the op rod to clear them... Patience with a handfile and vice solved that...

Cheers

the nut and bolt thing is the way to go- and if you ever decide you want to mount a bipod you'll be already there- i've found it almost impossible to find a anvil/flaring tool large enough to mimic the usgi rivet

I have used the screws and nuts that look almost like the original rivets . I also have the rivets and the setter ,but I have not tried to use it yet .Beware there are no universal screws that fit all stocks ,some "Heavy" NM USGI stocks will require longer screws ,but most standard USGI stocksare the same .
I had a hard time finding these ,even in Houston ,Texas ,but I use 10-32 TPI button head cap screws 3/8" long . These work very well and mimic the look of the original rivets. If you want rivets you will need to find some 3/16" tube rivets either in 1/4" or 5/16" length. .These can be found at a "good hardware store ,NOT Home Depot .
I hope this helps!
If you cannot locate these and need some drop me a email .

On one of my Boyds stock, I "harvested" the original rivets and then transplanted the whole kit to the new stock. I flared out the rivets the best I could and then used coloured Acraglas to keep everything together. Had to sand it down a little after it set up. If I were to do it again, I think that I would use the srcew and nut set-up. You could round-off the head if you didn't like the look.

For a serious competition stock, like a fat bastard McMillan (the only one to compete with) we carried out this method....

Fill in the holes with DEVCON. Let it harden and cure overnight. Drill and tap them with # 10 x 24 tpi tools.

Go to Home Depot or Brafasco (for you S. Ontario types) and buy a bunch of # 10 x 24 tpi x 1/4" or 5/16" or 3/8" screws. Different lengths gives you more flexibility during the installation process for all different thicknesses of USGI glass stocks or McMillan fat bastard M1A NM profile stocks.

Coat the screw threads with wax, just an old practice of mine.

Install the sling swivel plate with the # 10 x 24 screws of different lenghts to see what works best for you. With the DEVCON, those screws ain't ever gonna pull out.

Speaking of sling pressure and pulling out, a common practice of our NRA High Power team was to tack weld the sling swivel plate where the metal is curled up to contain the 1 1/4" sling loop. Often shooters would pull on these sling plates with so much pressure the metal plates would bend backwards to the shooter. Quickly solved by a small tack weld...

For most of you M14 lovers, this tack welding is not truly necessary , so I hardly give it any attention in my M14 clinics / videos.

Cheers,
Barney
