Hello, is using a dummy round to cycle the action of the gun as good as using a snap cap?

Reason I ask is because dummy rounds seem to be cheaper than snap caps.

Also what is the procedure for purchasing dummy rounds from the states and can I buy M1 garand adjustable gas plug and bring it back from the states?

dummy rounds are usually meant to sit on a shelf, snapcaps are often solid aluminium and they have an insert at the base to prevent damage to the firing pin

Action Proving Dummies are made with real cases and real bullets or shot, just no primers and no powder. Their purpose is to cycle through an action with no possibility of a cartridge firing. They do not protect the firing pin when dry-firing.

Snap Caps are only designed to protect the firing pin when dry-firing. They are not suitable dummies.

With that said I'm sure that someone does, or did, make a suitable combo. The plastic ones advertised are not good dummies and should be used as snap caps only.

Hi. If you're reloading, make some DP cartridges. A snap cap isn't the same thing. No powder or primer, of course, but drill a wee hole in the case too. A 150 grain FMJ will do nicely. You should crimp 'em too.
Mind you, you don't have to worry about dry firing an M1 Rifle anyway. It was part of the training back in the day.
I think, but am not sure, that DP cartridges are treated as live ammo, for who knows why. M1 Rifle parts are not on the U.S. government's 'restricted for export list'.
The adjustable gas plug is a way of separating you from your money too. No 'Light Magnums'.
