Dummy rounds?

I've tried using plastic snap caps for training reloads but they're pretty bad and the ones I found like to crack in to pieces.

Anyone have a line on some reasonable quality/reasonably priced dummy rounds?

I used Tipton, but now switched to Remington or Fiocchi.

You could also make your own from a shot shell, trim it, fill it, fold it back and hot glue the top.

Hot glue was the thing I wasn't thinking of. That's a great idea. Thanks! I haven't been able to find the Fiocchis in stock anywhere or the remingtons even listed so that's probably going to be my next best bet.

Can’t remember the maker name but I’ve been using the bright orange dummy rounds, the ones with a clear hull and the hiviz plastic internals. I filled them with bb’s and siliconed the top closed, they have the weight of a factory shell now and I’ve had them for 6-8 years. They’ve held up fine and we’re cheap when I bought them.

I have been making my own for years, just drill out the spent primer( even works with Berdan primed cases.) and fill the hole with hot glue, use a razor blade to trim flush when set up.

Also drill a few holes in the side of the case to show its a dummy.

+1 for DIY. There's a few ways to do them, but the closer you can get to the feel and balance of loaded shells the better (i.e. wad of some kind and then pack with shot right under the flaps).

I used some unusual colour hulls that I came across, so it's easy to keep them from getting mixed up with live shells.

Ages ago I made a bunch of dummy rounds by drilling out the primer pocket and filling some high brass hulls with urethane (harder and more durable than silicone). Then cutting the urethane in the primer pocket flush with a razor, and cutting the end of the shell flush at crimp length.

Since then I've purchased both the commercial plastic (Tipton) and solid aluminum (A-Zoom) offerings and still prefer my ghetto snap caps.

I bought some "S.T. Action Pro Trainer Dummy Rounds". They have a metal rim, translucent plastic hull, and some orange plastic as a stiffener inside. They are not the right weight, but as mentioned by others you can add some weight inside them if you wish. They were $2 a piece. I bought 12. They appear to be more durable than the Tiptons, which as you have seen can separate at the rim and become jammed in the magazine tube or chamber.

That’s the brand I have, I filled them with brass washed bb’s and siliconed them shut. They’re great and have held up well.

Brass is the best material for standing up to repeated cycling - Extractors can be hard on them. The "Snap Caps" that I had for a pistol didn't last long before they were chewed up too badly to cycle properly.
