It has probably been asked on here 100 times, but I did a search and found no real results. I was just wondering what powder they used. I have read RL15, 4064, 4895 and some even seem to think Varget. Is there a real answer out there?

As I posted in another thread, here is a quote from a February 2012 article written by Frederick Salberta in The Rifleman's Journal, an online journal run by Arizona Palma shooter German Salazar:

The result, when it was standardized as the MK316 Mod 0 cartridge, was a Federal modified case (Drawing number 8347636), Federal match primer, Sierra 175 grain Matchking and 41.75 grains of IMR 4064 powder. According to the published sources this load will produce a muzzle velocity of 2640 fps out of a 24 inch barrel. The load as produced by Federal is claimed to produce under 1 MOA out to 1000 yards from an appropriate rifle. With the IMR powder the shift in velocity is only 20 fps from 0 to 100 Deg C, with the Standard deviation in velocity over 40 rounds being 15 fps or less. In contrast the M118LR loaded with RE-15 powder will see a 50 fps rise in velocity for a 50 deg rise in temperature.

According to this article, Federal uses IMR 4064 for all of the Gold Medal .308 loads.

Imr 4064

out of my hs precision htr, i use 41.5 gr of 4064 with 168g sierra hpbt match bullets. My best 5 shot group at 100 mtrs is .473 largest is .754. I don't have a crony so i can't tell you what fps is. I am new to reloading and I don't shoot that much either so these results are pretty impressive for me. when i shoot factory Federal gold metal match the results are very similar. Before my hs i had a rem 700p. It also shot this load very well. Thats all i can say. rifle-HS precision HTR 24" barrel
cal-.308
load-41.5 gr IMR 4064
