Dusting clays

Was shooting a few rounds of trap the other evening and an old timer commented about how clay targets don't "smoke" anymore when centred in the pattern. Got thinking and yes I do remember clays being reduced to a small black cloud... but can't honestly say I've seen this happen in recent time. They just smash into tiny shards these days. Any comments?

Might be a brand thing, white flyers are a bit tougher then caldwells, they can still smoke like that if hit at close range, but I haven't noticed them do that nearly as much at trap distances as the caldwells.

Maybe the ol' timer is starting to let them get out a little further ?

A good full choke and 3 dram 1-1/8 oz. 8's will certainly "smoke 'em" from 16 at
about 34 yards. A few yards further out... well, lots of little pieces .....

Maybe they're not as "centred" as one thinks ? Or the choke istn't as tight as advertised ?

I believe that some targets are harder than others. White Flyers tend to break better than Lawry's and Lawry biodegradable are harder still. The downside to more fragile targets is increased breakage in the machines.

What also matters is humidity. With all the rain and dampness we've had in Ontario I can see how they may not be ink-balling the way they used to.

I've never cared whether the target was chipped or smoked. We count them, we don't grade them. ;)

Here is a fringe hit at the Griffin & Howe Game Conservacy this weekend:

This was shot by Cornelius T' Mannetje, CEO of Aug.Lebeau-Courally. He was a great shot finishing with a 87 only several targets down from HOA at 92.

Here is Alexander Diebl, the general manager of Krieghoff International, center punching a BIO:

BTW Cornelius was using a K-20!

Caldwell is making a different "MIX" for his targets than years ago. I know this to be true as I know Bob well. I can smoke targets with the best of them but they smoke like they did years ago.
