I am going to legally carry a Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull 7.5" barrel revolver in a Mernickle leather flap crossdraw holster.

It will be carried for wilderness defense during geological fieldwork in rugged wet terrain eg. BC, NWT, Yukon.

In wet weather, the rig will be worn on the outside of my parka.

I need advice on 2.25" duty or garrison belts that will comfortably support this heavy revolver for long periods.

I am leaning towards a plain or basketweave leather duty belt from either Tex Shoemaker or Gould & Goodrich.

Is leather a wise choice given the wet conditions it will be exposed to?

Are the stiffened cordural nylon duty belts a better choice?

I may go to a diagonal shoulder strap if required.

Should I get the belt lined or unlined? What difference does it make?

Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated.

I prefer nylon for weather proofness, keeps the weight down and retains it's shape. Any decent nylon duty belt with a velcro inner belt should work well. The inner belt goes in your pant belt loops and the duty belt goes over it, securing onto the velcro. Very good for keeping your duty belt from slipping around and helps with the weight as well. I use that system at work and my duty belt when fully loaded tips the scale at more than 14 pounds  ... (pistol, mags, 45 rounds, flashlight, baton, prime ministerial spay, handcuffs, radio ) and I wonder why my back is a little sore when I run and jump fences...

I'm with troutseeker on this........

I have nothing on my belt that is not impervious to the weather.

Go to Hub Sports when you can and ask Roger about the belt that troutseeker mentioned. That is my main belt now. If he doesn't have one in stock he can get it in right away for you. You can't beat Roger's pricing/service anywhere locally as well.

I shop at Hub Sports whenever I can.

Too bad Roger had to get out of the gun selling business.

One dishonest employee :(

He used to have very fair pricing on his consignment guns.

JB is correct, the suspenders help a lot with the weight. I wear some when I do foot patrols for 6 or more hours. I dont feel I need them for everyday wear when I spend 80% of my time sitting in a cruiser...

MD charlto is where I get my stuff, if Murray does not have it he'll bring it in. Great guy to deal with.

W.W.II Web Belt

For snow and wet conditions, my pic would be a Cdn Issue web belt to carry the full flap holster. Its wide, adjustable and with some waterproofing wont soak up much moisture. Any lined leather belt will soak up water eh. Leather when wet is not fun"
The nylon garrison type belt is even better; the web belt is a "keep it super simple solution" and is "expendable" to some degree.
