If you purchase an antique in the US from a PRIVATE individual (ie not a business), is there any duty due to be paid when bringing it back across the boarder into Cananda?

(sorry in advance as I know this must have been asked before but I can't find it)

You may be required to pay GST. My recent experience with orders from the USA has been if the value exceeds about $300 it may attract interest from Cdn Customs and they may assess GST. However, I have had orders that exceeded $500 arrive with no GST so who knows? My imports have not included whole guns - just gun parts..

My stuff always comes Parcel Post - never UPS, FEDEX, etc because they will hammer you for a "Brokerage Fee" for filling out some mysterious forms at the border - that aren't involved if the parcel comes via post office. Always specify shipping by US Post Office insured parcel post - never UPS or the like.

*Anything* that is 100 years old or older is an Antique and duty free no matter where it was made. You will have to pay GST if it is coming into Ontario. From CBSA:

Works of Art and Antiques
Works of art and antiques may be imported to Canada duty free providing:
\ Works of art are forming part of a bona fide household removal.
\ Articles are over 100 years old.
\ They are not for sale or other disposal.
