EAL stock finish?

BLO. Boiled Linseed Oil. That one has the 'battle' rear sight with a commercial front sight. Bubba didn't quite finish it. Either way, wood is wood. Use the same products and techniques you'd use on fine furniture.

Main thing to remember- don't touch it with sandpaper. As someone said, sandpaper removes value with every stroke.
If anything, maybe 0000 steel wool, then rub it with multiple coats of BLO.

Others may know better.
 
BLO was the original finish, however, I would sugges polymerized Tung oil. (Lee valley tools)
Same look, better protection, faster building, and less of a PITA to work with.

As far as the stock prep: I would apply a chemical stripper, remove the stripper, wipe down with liberal amounts of mineral spirits, steam out any dents, then sand it (yes, sand it) with 600 grit wet-or dry paper drenched in Tung oil. I'd do this for the first 6 coats (helps fill the pores), then wipe on-wipe off 6 more coats of Tung (allowing 48 hrs between coats)

Don't use steel wool if you can help it. Small pieces will lodge themselves into the pores....not good.

nope your right and sunray is mistaken :D


should see stamping on the flip 200 and 400

military were set for 300 and 600, but with the different barrel lenght and front site they changed the zero.

Are the military versions stamped C Broad Arrow or similar?

they all got the C A stamped on the barrel Knox

I dont have a military version so I don't know if they have other markings.

If you look at the EAL Joe Salter has for sale, you'll note that his has a 300/600 sight, which is not correct...

I'd like to see that, and maybe you could forward any pics to member Wheaty who is supposedly writing an updated article about these. When I get mine in about 2 weeks or so I'll do the same.

As I told you I prefer the looks of the civilian version...the military one with that flat receiver looks too boring IMHO...even though yes it's rarer and more desirable.

I've been searching Essential Arms and EAL and you know who's always on those threads? That would be you...;)

I hope you find a military model for your collection one of these days. Problem is with this info out and about the price isn't dropping any.

A fellow gun nut is refinishing the stock on this rifle (that I bought from xcaribooer) with Culvers Paste, a blend of BLO, wax and turpentine. Pics will be posted when it's finished.
