Do any of you use earplugs when hunting? Is it worth using when deer hunting with .308 or when hunting turkeys with magnum loads? Do they make earplugs which allow you to hear wildlife but only activate once the loud shot goes off?

Electronic ear muffs are what I use. Amplify natural sounds around you but cut out when shooting. I never shoot without hearing protection, even when hunting. I would be curious to know if they make noise cancelling plugs though, might be less cumbersome than full muffs.

Nope, need all the help I can get. Usually hear them before you see them and then the last thing I want to be doing is fumbling with ear protection.

Yep. x2.

But, I'm not a duck hunter. Maybe in a blind with 2 or 3 guns going at one time, it might be good. Dunno. Haven't tried that.

Every shot without protection damages your hearing. It is cumulative and not reversible. I know this from considerable experience ( the wrong kind) and lots of research. I am trying to preserve the crappy hearing ability that I have left by wearing electronic muffs while doing high volume shooting like waterfowl, and wear valve type ear plugs when hunting big game.

When I am on a range I always wear hearing protection. When hunting no. I like to hear what's going on. I never notice the sound of the gun or the recoil when shooting at game.

I wear muffs for all target practice, plus lawn mowing, snow blowing, using loud power tools, etc. I probably would wear them for high-volume shooting like doves or prairie dogs. But there is no way I would wear them for typical hunting, with only one or two shots being fired, unless I were shooting from inside some kind of enclosed blind.

this ^^^, except the electronic ones for big game as well, it's like having a bionic ears , works great.

I get those push-in style earplugs connected on the string. I always wear them around my neck when hunting.
If I feel I could be getting close to shooting, I'll put one in, and put the other in before actually shooting.
When at the range, it's a good idea to wear both ear plugs and earmuffs.
Save your hearing, once tinnitus sets in, it's there for good!

I've never used ear protection for hunting, only when shooting skeet and or blasting off more than a few rounds at the range with the high power's. Everyone tells me I can't hear worth a s*** already but I run heavy equipment for 12+ hours a day and can't stand ear plugs, I never wear em untill it's loud enough that it hurts.

Not to hijack your thread but: I wear hearing protection only when sighting in my rifles. Is it only me when I say: My ears ring when sighting in without hearing protection, but stand and shoot varmints and it seems to not make my ears ring????? Almost similar to how your finger ONLY hurts if you hit that darn little peg when playing crokanole.

Just purchased howard leight sport electronic ear muffs on amazon for 65 shipped. I tried ear plugs and did not enjoy the outdoor experience of hearing game. Electronic muffs shut off when you go bang and block the rifle or shotgun blast. Amazing reviews for this product on amazon. They have 22db hearing protection so pretty good for hunting but not enough if you used them for a range. But for hunting I pretty sure they are what you are looking for.
