Didn't know where to put this but anyway here goes. I purchased a sporterized 98 mostly for the barrel it is a 8-57, military contour, 26" long, but suspect its been cut by an inch - no step for front sight, the outside and bore is perfect (as in new). The stock is beech I think, not a bad home job except for the checkering. The action is what caught my eye, especially the serial # 546 with matching bolt, however no name - St ----?, N183Gr, which I suspect is nitro proof with a 183 gr bullet on front ring?, F,E,H,V,J and 7 on under side of action, not a speck of rust any where.

The question is can anyone shed any light on the action / any other aspect, mfg. date by whom etc. Thanks in advance --- John303.

Hmmmmmm.

The 'St ----?, N183Gr' is a proof mark under the German 1891 Proof Laws, and if you could read the rest it would be 'St.M.G. 183Gr' or 'steel-jacketed bullet' of 183grains. Not sure where the 'N' fits in, unless it's underneath a crown in which case it stands for nitro proof..

The other marks you note - 'F,E,H,V,J and 7 on under side of action' are all inspection stamps.

I would say the barrel has been cut down and the action is a large ring. There is a very small crown over the N and it's 18.3 Gr., (my mistake). Would it be possible that it is a "commercial" action / barreled action sold to some "smithy" and therefore no other id marks and an odd barrel lenght etc.? The serial # would make it early / WW 1. Thanks --- John303.
