Early FNC1 Sling

I bought several RCAF and Khaki Canadian slings from an old timer a while back. He had this stuff for years.
One of them is dated 1959 made by the Hugh Carson Company of Ottawa who have apparently been making Candian kit since WW1!

I showed it to my buddy who said he hadn't seen one of these since 1962!

He said the early FN's from Canadian Arsenals (Long Branch) had them until the '64 pattern webbing came out.

I asked if it was a No4 sling and he said it would be the same as one but these were apparently bought new and then supplied with the C1's...not sure but it's cool to have. Cheers Paul

He's correct. We used them well into the '70's. They were #4 slings but we used them until we used them up. If I had known what they would be worth, I would have grabbed a few of the better ones with markings for these days.

When I went through the PPCLI Battle School in the 80's we were still issued the khaki slings. I didn't get a "proper" sling until I was posted to 1st Bn in Calgary. There used to be 2 types of FN slings, one a little longer for C-2, but they were usually mixed up in the CQMS stores and you got issued what you got issued. I still have my C-2 sling, it came with brass buckles as opposed to plastic ( an older issue I suspect and they didn’t break in the arctic), and I used it until the issue of the patrol sling on my C-7.

My first FN was a C1, not a C1A1. It came in a cardboard box with 4 mags in plastic bags, a sling, a pull thru and a grenade launcher.

I drew it so I could shoot it in service matches. I had to return it once a year and then get it re-issued.

I did not like it. The rear sight was on a hump that bashed me in the mouth.

Cool guys!...When I was in during the mid-70's I only saw '64 pattern slings on our C1/C2.
The Cadet group had boxes and boxes of the Khaki!
I remember most of them were from Woods in Toronto, or Zepher (ZLT) in Guelph.
