I am a resident hunter and will have tags for all big game species. I am focusing on my goat tag but could easily run into elk, sheep, and mulies. Possibly white tail and moose. The particular area I'm going is grizz territory. I was just curious on your opinions of which of my hunting rifles you would take. I'll likely be solo most of the time. See Poll above. I'm letting the general consesus decide this year. Whichever rifle is ahead at the end of the month gets a little tlc and a load workup.

300 win mag
edit - after seeing your list, I would vote the 300 rum.
The savage with an aftermarket stock would do the trick also.

I've spent time in the "EK" (Bull River Valley), Preference for me would be at least a 30cal, but not a slug chucker like the 45-70.

I'm not much of a Savage fan, so my vote goes to the 338-06.

Same area. 17 grizz in my path last season. Many had 3 cubs. Only be worse this year.
I take a 30-06 with 200gr partitions or a 35 Whelen with 250 gr partitions both with 1.5-6 optics.
Solo with a great dog most of the time.
Good luck.

Ive hunted with savage rifles for years. Mainly due to having a young family and couldn't afford much more. I hate the stocks but I always found the jeweled bolts to be smooth enough.
Maybe throw your best scope on that 300 wm and head out?

I was thinking exactly that but I love to debate rifles and calibers. I may let public opinion choose for me though

In the thick of it the caliber isn't going to make as much difference as the bullet and his cool you keep your head if a grizzly becomes an issue.

The Tikka is light and flat shooting with more than enough to cleanly take any of the animals mentioned.

If I really felt the need for more I'd step right into the 300 RUM.

The 338-06 is a very good cartridge as well and if ideas to carry it the magazine would be full of 210gr Ttsxs.

I'd grab a 300WM. I'm fairly indifferent about the Savage rifles...I've got one and my Stevens 200 30-06 was one of the best shooting rifles I've ever seen out of the box. Fanning the bolt isn't a difficulty for me and the only ####-up I ever had was when I cycled the bolt for a second shot (or in preparation thereof) on a moose in -25C weather I had a misfire and the bullet stuck in the throat when I cycled the rifle, pulling the bullet and dumping the powder into the blind mag. I'm sure that the new owner is still picking grains of 4350 out of there! Couldn't replicate the issue and never had another problem with it despite hunting with the rifle for 6 more years in the arctic. I'd probably still own it today but 4 30-06s could be considered excessive.

Regardless...I think the 300Wm is the right choice given that you have elk on the menu and bears in the vicinity. Also, sheep and goats usually require gaining elevation and my guess (semi-educated) is that your 300 RUM is significantly heavier than the Savage which would make me less than inclined to pack it up hill and down dale when there is a comparable lighter weight rifle in the offing.

Yeah the RUM has some weight to it. I've packed heavier for much longer distances but I'm not in my 20's anymore and I haven't hunted the alpine before.

I'd say buy a tikka in the caliber you like.
300 win would handle anything you need.

Wsm calibers will probably cost you more to shoot and might be slightly harder to find.

I already have a Tikka in 270wsm. The question isn't if I should buy a Tikka, I'm having trouble choosing which of my rifles to sight in and develope load for this hunting season. But thanks for the input!
