I have a 3 year old Field Bred Springer Spaniel and I am posting to see if there is anyone in Eastern Ontario with dogs who might be interested in getting together to hunt this year, for wild birds and potentially split on preserve birds if you are interested.

Very few “younger” folks with birds dogs, too much work for not enough shooting I’d guess. Touch base if you are interested, post in this thread and maybe we can put something together.

Define well trained, He is my first self trained dog. He doesn’t hup, but he flushed and retrieves well, ranges a bit big but his whole line is like that, but this year I’ll be working on reeling him in a bit.

He has hunted two season, over 120 upland birds shotnover him and he has retrieved ~180 ducks and geese. Two fall turkeys with him as well.

I’m in the Ottawa area.

Green Jeep Guy,

Murray has offered me a spot to train if I want it a couple of times, I used to gun for the Ottawa Balley Pointing Dog Club, lots to learn from NAVDHA, but I sometimes have a tough time “playing the field trial game”.

just another note, please understand that NAVHDA is not involved in field trials, it is an organization that hosts tests. The difference is Trials are competitive and have winners and losers, Tests have panel of three judges who evaluate a dogs ability and training against a written standard. Nobody wins or loses, they just receive a score. The atmosphere is completely different than trials, and is much more collaborative. Sadly, I don't know of any similar testing system available for the flushing breeds that you could look into.

Most NAVDHA chapters are very open to flushing dogs on training days, you can obviously not test a flushing dog. I am aware of the differences between a trial and a NAVDHA test, I was making a generality with the comparison that was perhaps not valid.

There are Spaniel Trials in Ontario, some of the first Spaniel trials in North America were held out west, but a lot of behaviours desirable for trials are undesirable (atleast for me) in the field.

I guess I should change the title of the thread to “ Anyone is eastern Ontario with selftrained dogs want to go hunting”.
