Hey guys,
I have really old 20 ga single shot break barrel shotgun.
The fore end had a crack and the screw holes were completely stripped and it had a really thick varathane finish that looked terrible.
I removed the stock and for end repaired the crack and filled the screw holes with an epoxy and stripped the old finish. Drilled and mounted old hardware, put it back together and it's rock solid.
It turns out the wood grain is really nice and I would like to put a good finish on it. Make this old bird pretty again. Gave it a good sand (started with 100 grit and worked it up to 220) and it is a smooth as butter
My question is what kind of finish would be best? Not going to stain and don't want anything too glossy.
There are many different varathane finishes but I am not sure if I want to take that route. I was thinking of doing a french polish but that is a lot of work, and it's easy to screw up. Has anyone tried Tung oil?
I have never tried it and was wondering if it would be similar to a french polish as far as amount of work vs quality of finish. Basically would tung oil give as nice of a finish with less work.
I paid $40.00 for it and all of my hunting buddies laugh at it, until we start shooting. The thing is, you CAN'T miss with this old bird. I out shoot all of these guys that are using high end $1000 dollar shotguns.
I like this one over my high end shogun.
Did't think to take any before pics, I will post after pics though.
Thank you for any advise
