Economy SxS?

I have a Boito A-680, made in Brazil, which I bought used from another Gunnut on the EE. I think they are good enough for the money, new or used, but for the new price you could probably pick up something better on the used market, if you can be patient. Stoeger imports them and now markets them as the Stoeger Uplander.

Hello

I think the baikal sxs are an excellent value. There built very strong and to last. There not the lightest or best looking but they go bang every time. I have 3.... 20g, 28 and a 410. They have ejectors, single selective triggers and walnut stocks. The 20g and 410 have 3" chambers. the 28g has 2 and 3/4

It just so happens, there for sale. check out my thread in shotguns for sale

Look for a Stoeger Uplander. Great gun for the money. I got my Uplander 20 ga used for 280$ in excellent shape.

Stevens 311. Lots of 'em available in a wide range of gauges. Watch the EE or check the used racks at your local shops.

I've picked up a couple of decent SXS's from Tradex. There's some good value to be found, for sure. Just be aware that some of them are 2 1/2" chambered. If you recall, all chambers are actually 1/4" longer than the shell they fit, to allow for the crimp to open into.

I'd be concerned if people new to shotguns started putting 2 3/4" heavy game loads through vintage SXS's with 2 1/2" chambers. At a minimum, always insist on knowing:

  • (gun) the chamber length of the gun?
  • (gun) black powder or nitro (smokeless) proofed?
  • (gun) lead or steel compatable barrel(s)?
  • (shell) length of shell?
  • (shell) powder load?
  • (shell) type of shot (lead, steel, or what)?

If you don't know or can't find out these basic details, don't buy the gun or fire it with those shells, whatever the case.

If you want to learn more about those very points, this is the place to ask questions.
