I'm looking to buy an inexpensive, non-restricted, semi-auto rifle for occasional plinking. Right now I'm open for any suggestions, although I don't really care for the "AK-47" styled rifles. I'm looking for something around $400.

EDIT: Earlier I mentioned I wanted .223 caliber. I assumed there would be some inexpensive semi-autos chambered in .223. I don't need .223 ammo, just something that is not expensive to shoot, something comparable to the price of .223, if possible.

Someone in another thread mentioned the M-305 rifle at Marstar, that seems like it may fit what I want. I'm still open to other suggestions, though.

Man, you can't even find a Mini-14 that cheap. You're looking at a minimum $500-600 for a used Mini or CQ311. If you're looking for non-restricted .223 under $1000, the Mini will be your only choice, unless you find a smoking deal on an AR180B.

Buy a Cz-858. Non restricted. Milarm has them for around <400.00? with one mag. Loads of fun!!!!
very accurate!!!!
And when you shoot a CZ you look like a real man. Have you ever looked at a ruger mini 14? looks a Jack-all that that someone converted into a gun.

i dont think you will find any semi auto 223's for around 300$

you will be looking at a bolt action for that price range like a Stevens bolt action which runs about 300-330 new

You're quest will not be achieved, not in this country.

Semi-auto .223 will run you at least the $1000 range. sure the Mini-14 is less than $1000 but it's junk. You'll spend more trying to make it shoot half decent.

Now we wait for the "My Mini-14 shoots great!" Yeah, after you dumped money into it.

To all the Mini 14 haters, sean18mb never said he needed an accurate rifle ;)

If accuracy is a non-issue, go for the mini 14 because it is quite reliable. If you can afford it, upgrade to an AR-180b. The ARs are great but you can't legally plink with them outside of an approved range.

If you are stuck on that $300 price range, you might have to go to a Stevens bolt action as was mentioned above...
