I thought I'd dip into the wisdom pool here before spending my hard earned cash. Guys, practically speaking what is the best muzzle device for a .30 caliber battle rifle?

I am a fan of the prong flash hiders a-la FN-FAL as I found them to be the most effective compensator/break as well as a very effective flash hider. Problem is, no one seems to make them for 5/8x 24.

The only improvement to a 4 prong in my mind would be a linear compensator, but like fishing lures that are designed to catch fishermen, all the linear compensators I see, seem to be much about nothing...and really expensive.

Break is the best, helps to minimize recoil when rapid fire mag dumping into trash, or trying to clear out the benches next to you at the range.

Do you mean something like a Smith Ent Vortex? They make them in 5/8”x24. YHM Phantom is another good flash hider/compensator.

I'm a fan of Noveske Flaming Pigs for shorter barreled rifles or bullpups. Gets the noise away from the shooter. Can increase the back pressure a bit, so may need to adjust accordingly. Are rated for full auto, and are easily sold if not your thing. I don't use public ranges though, so if pissing off your neighbors is the goal, this isn't the tool for the job.

The poll choices make no sense.

1. A birdcage and a flash hider are the same thing. A birdcage IS a flash hider.
2. What's a "break"?
3. If by "break" you mean BRAKE, then a brake and a compensator are the same thing.
4. Never heard the word "butter" used in reference to a firearm.

The poll itself makes no sense.

What's the best ... for what? If you want recoil reduction then a brake is the best. If you want flash reduction then a flash hider is the best. There is no "best" because muzzle devices are designed to do different things.

I am pretty new to this too. I have a Savage scout rifle that came with a muzzlebrake with three openings on it. It certainly did reduce the flash but made it so darn loud I couldn’t get it off fast enough. With just the 16” barrel there was considerable flash but at least it was better. I then picked up a 3” flash can from TNA and it is fantastic. No more flash and directs the sound further forward. I am extremely happy with it and was quite reasonably priced. I also have a weatherby vanguard with a 24” barrel and see no need for a device at all.
