i stopped in to the local CT tonight just to have a look at what they had in stock, I own a refurbished '54 and from reading up I know it has a hardwood stock. They had about a dozen in stock mostly 1952-54 in hardwood, but by itself at the end was a 1950 with a lighter coloured stock. I have only ever handled my own sks, so I just assumed it was a laminate stock because it was a much lighter colour than my refurbished '54 I bought it because I remember reading that the 1950 had a different firing pin that wouldn't slamfire, and also because I haven't seen a lot of '50's locally.
When I got home, I jumped on the SKS identification faq and started trying to figure out what I bought.
The bolt, dust cover and trigger group all match, the mag is obviously a replacement with a different number, but now it gets weird. I realize by looking through the faq that it's not a laminate stock at all, but a hardwood stock , but it has no lacquer/ shellac on it? The gasblock cover looks original, and though the stock is obviously a refurbish, unlike my '54, the serial number on the stock does not match the serial numbers on the rest of the gun? Has anyone ever seen an unfinished stock on a refurbish, it honestly looks to me as if it was stripped and not re varnished?

As far as I know, they were sanded down during refurb. When I was there on Saturday, they had two refurbs that had sanded down stocks, both with a handful of stock repairs.

Yeah, I've seen a few of those at CT before. They are half refinished, guy at the counter says most guys shellac it themselves or replace them with tapco stocks.

I just bought a butt ugly early 1950 with the sanded stock couple repairs etc. Bought it due to the early 50 cover latch with the hole in the latch and hand stamped year, good thing is, it has a brand new chrome barrel and what looks like new or new parts on the bolt still has the spring firing pin though! Trigger group looks great and the parkerizing is really nice! Dont like that sanded unfinished stock but from what i understand they oiled them for a finish! It has a blade bayo but was supposed to come with spike in early 1950!
$175. Good deal no matter how ugly the stock is!

Thanks guys, that's good to know! The stock is in great shape, as a matter of fact, the whole rifle is in good shape, original barrel from what I can tell, and not very beat up at all, I'm quite happy with it, the unfinished stock threw me when I figured out it was wood not laminate, newby problems lol
