Effect of AR front sight on low scope?

Hi guys,

I was going to title this "Probably Dumb Question" but vague thread-titles are a PITA.

Here's the story ... I have a basic AR with carry-handle iron sights and standard front sight. I'd like to have the option of removing the handle and mounting a basic small scope (maybe a 1-4 variable with no front bell) right on the receiver rail ... as close to the bore as possible.

But I don't want to go through the major hassle (I think it's a major hassle) of removing and later replacing the front sight ... with all the attendant re-zeroing issues.

The question? How much is that massive front sight going to mess up the "sight-picture" / effectiveness of my low-mounted scope?

Probably a lot, I expect.

Depends on which power you are using. The lower the power the more noticble the front site will be. In my experience, anything above 3 x power and the front site is a grey blur and it is not a problem. Go under that power and then it does become an obtruction, particularly at 1 x power, and particularly if you have it mounted lower than the normal site plane. Mounting it higher helps somewhat.

Thanks ... that's an encouraging note. Maybe a small fixed 4-power on a riser rail? Raising the scope a bit would also more-closely duplicate the "normal" cheek-weld of the iron sights.

Almost everyone here raves about high-dollar optics for their pet guns, but I'm still a firm believer that the Law of Diminishing Returns really does apply to optics. My $300 Pentax binoculars are 85% as good as my (wealthy) friend's $1800 Leicas. Bearing that in mind, any recommendations for a decent little $150 scope for this application?

BTW, I just paid $200 for Pelican's AR15-specific carrying case :) ... easily worth twice as much as most $100 cases.

On a carbine flat top with a Falcon Menace 1.5-5x30SIR mounted on a LaRue SPR/M4 1.93" Mount QD LT-135, the FSB is not visible at all at any magnification. Completely invisible. The 1.93" is a tad high for an ideal cheek weld, but I'm sure the FSB would be just as invisible with something the height of the lower LT-104.

I'm running a Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4 magnification optic on my rifle. I have zero issues with my fixed FSB. If you look closely you can see a faint sort of hazy area where the FSB is. However, if you run your optics properly with both eyes open and focus on the target, you don't see anything. At 2x or higher there is nothing to indicate a FSB in the image. I'm using the Larue SPR-E mount.
