Egyptian FN49 8mm mauser what ammo is good?

You'll know instantly if your gas system is adjusted properly for a load. If the thing whangs the brass over into the next municipality, then you are getting too much gas to the piston. The cure is to BLEED more gas out of the system; you do this by removing the front handguard and adjusting the rotating sleeve to reveal more of the little hole into the barrel where the gas comes up to meet the piston (gas port, in proper terminology).

If you're getting 'WAY too much gas with one of these, it can slam-fire, which is REALLY undesirable.

You will get the best accuracy from the rifle with the brass just popping out and landing quietly on the bench beside you.

For handloading, be sure to use a fairly fast powder, something in the IMR-4895/3031/4064 range. Leave the slow powders alone for any semi-auto...... unless, of course, you really like problems.

Egyptian model came out with a 1-piece firing-pin. As a safety measure, a lot of guys converted these to use the 2-piece pin.

They have one of these in the restricted reference collection in Ottawa that's really neat: pistol grip only, no butt, barrel chopped right in front of the gas block, gold-inlaid crest, selective-fire, too! It was one that was used when King Farouk went out; his bodyguards carried these monsters for 'security'. Of course, the common slobs were allowed to PAY for them but they weren't allowed to OWN them. Sound familiar?

They are truly a beautifully-made rifle.

Have fun!
