Hi all i just got a J.C. Higgins Model 60 in a trade from an old friend. The shotgun looks in great shape but i took it out shooting with some cheap 7 1/2 bird shot and it fails to eject 3/5 shells. Any suggestions? I might try some heavier load today.

If it is a situation where the extractor is slipping off of the case head and the case is somewhat stuck in the chamber it could be a pitted chamber that needs polishing. If any other type of non extract or non eject it could be a multitude of things. I believe that your JC Higgins was made by High Standard and were pretty well made guns. Don't give up on her. Some more details of the malfunction would help in determining a possible solution.

cheers Darryl

ok thanks, i will get back to you on that, i was told a stronger extractor spring maybe a possible fix, but ill have to see.
Update: Around the chamber where the extractor notch it is beaten up a little and if a stick a shell in it sometimes wont be pulled out after slamming the bolt forward.

It have an old JC Higgens too. It has never thrown the casing clear. I have looked at it off and on for about 11 years now. To me it almost seems the the cases of the fired shells are too long for a clean extraction. I have cleaned it and changed the spring adjustment all over the place and I have never been able to get it to work.

A senior pal of mine bought one new years ago.

Said it always "sticks" except with Canuck shells.

Problem is they haven't made Canucks for 40 years.

jc higgins/high standard

jc higgins were made for sears by high standard as far as I have been able to find out. Mine was bought at sears by my dad, never had any problems with ejecting shells, but it has always been a little picky with long brass shells.
there is a company in New York that you can get parts from, we had a catalog at the club, I'll look tomorrow and see if I can find it(had a nice exploded view. ps: mines a 26 incher, ventalated rib with a poly choke

Try different brands of shells, not more powerful shells, even people with some of the better or newer makes are having problems with cheap Canadian tire or Walmart brands even if they are made by Winchester.

Hey I have a model 60 as well, does the same thing, I am replacing all extraction and ejection parts ( Numrich Rocks) I'll report back my results. Funny thing is it used to only do it with Winchester ammo now it does it on any brand
