I recently bought a Savage model 12 fv , It seems to be having some ejection issues when I tried with snap caps. Is this common or should I be replacing the ejector spring.

Thanks for any input

Savage quality has deteriorated over recent years, lots on the net about this. Recently bought a Savage 110 and had a horrible experience with Savage. Had it rebarrelled under warranty and then returned back to me with the same rifling smear that it was meant to correct. Will never buy another Savage.

Savage=junk, same with most of the entry lines churned out by most of the big manufacturers. Save for a few weeks longer and find something nicer. Saving a couple hundred dollars isn't worth the headache, and life is just too short.

Savage has great support in Canada. My buddy had a barrel issue with his 17HMR, he called Savage had quick turn around and they threw in a spare magazine.

Or you can just order a upgrade kit online and replace it yourself if you are okay with working on guns. Be warned, the detent is under extreme pressure and will take off flying if you are not careful. For the record this is my second rifle make with this type of problem, but at least they don't fire by themselves. :)

The Savage FV is a great gun, enjoy it and make sure you leave your targets out so naysayers can stare at them. :)

Thanks , I ordered the upgrade kit

Most welcome, the work is straight forward, but the spring is a pain. I did it in my well lit dining room on a towel and a towel over me. Sure enough the detent flew out hit the towel on me and fell on the table towel. I have done the upgrade on two different rifle makers, now the brass just flies. Once you find the load your FV likes you will be stacking your shots. :)

I had a bad barrel a few years ago. Savage wouldn't do anything about it. Was brand new in the box but a few years old. That was their excuse. I mean the barrel was really, really bad.

what caliber is it? My 12 in 308 ejects fine but the hog hunter in 223 was terrible. I think the 223 is to small it loses any spring from the plunger before it clears to the port.
Seemed to be worse when I was prone in a match, really had to hammer the bolt back quick.

It's the 308 version

Well I have so many shooting buddies have problems with just about every gun maker. The biggest issue seems to be support outside of Canada, luck of the draw with any gun actually.

I have been shooting and seen my buddy's 3k rifle bolt assembly self destruct...

Personally I like older Remmy 700s or Sakos, love the Tikkas but the cost for a replacement magazine makes me just shake my head. In reality most modern firearms will outshoot my people. Was not getting the groups I expected from my Savage, my ex Canadian Forces buddy looks at me, shakes his head, grabs my bolt action off my shooting table, folds the bipod down, grabs his heavier .223 reloads, gets on the ground, rolls up his jacket for a rest, tells my to STFU, and takes a bunch of time before his first shot. Then takes time and before shooting he grabs and hold the barrel feeling heat. My barrel is pretty heavy so it holds the heat. The result was, at 300 yards in wind a group the size of a loonie, I can't do that. :( Since then I have ditched my crappy glass and bought a Athlon for my bolt action.

My last outside group (dime to get an idea) with my table using a bipod and 75 grain Hornady's in some wind at 119 yards (lasered and with a shooting buddy), but 300 yards is a different game, point is get to know your rifle and ammo first.

I bought two 12FV's last year both barrels were rusted out ended up selling the actions also have a Axis XP shoots flipping amazing can get five shot groups under 1.6 inches at 200 yards (she's a keeper) currently have just under 2,000 rounds through the barrel.

Would I purchase another Savage? Nope not since 5/18 happened

Definitely a common problem on Savage rifles.
Going through customer support is a good first step, they are usually super at sending out parts.

I've had a handful of Savage Axis and 11 rifles. I'm sure there's a reference somewhere on this page, but....
If you can find 9/64" ball bearings, all you need to do is push back the extractor (keep your thumb over the extractor ball bearing so it doesn't fly), and replace the ball bearing with a 9/64" one. Just that little bit of extra pressure on the extractor seems to keep the cartridge rim held until you eject. It's worked for every Savage I've had this issue with (most of them!!).

I found a supplier on Amazon (Uxell maybe?) that sells them in packs of 10 or 20. Pretty cheap fix and very easy to do.

Something about Savage rifles really gets people going, both pro and con. They are quite often project rifles right from the factory, the Axis and 11/110 series as well as the Mark II 22's have extraction/ejection issues that really turn people off. But usually with a simple fixes they turn into favorites.

I had an Axis in 223 that was easily the most accurate centrefire rifle I've ever owned out of 23 rifles. It felt like it was made in a Lego factory, but it was SO satisfying to look at the 100 and 200 yard groups.

Don't give up on the 12, especially if you handload, it has good accuracy potential.

I have a Steven's 200 action, its a real nice action... pre acutrigger. almost no tool marks, tight and smooth. It's sitting in one of the aluminum inlet/bedded stocks, with steel dbm... the only savage that I have handled/had and liked.

A few spicy reloads will compromise the original ejector spring.... and yeah they could never figure out the ball size(got my replacemens from fastenall)... or let's take a tikka/sako style extractor... those are nice.

Would be nice to have access to the Lower cost replacement bbls in the USA.....

I had a ton of trouble from Savage even started a thread on it ended up smoothing out the third barrels chamber with dermal tool stones so I could load the round .... Savage has lost all my business not to mention the one rifle they actually lost in a warehouse in Quebec.
