I took my nephew shooting for the first time yesterday. Well, the first time shooting with me anyway.

I was watching him shoot my barely broken in 14.5" AR yesterday and noticed the occasional Flash or "sparks" coming from the ejection port. Is this a normal condition? No FTF and no excessive signs of pressure. We were shooting my reloads: 55 grain FMJ's over 24.4 grains of WC845 (maybe a little hot). Thoughts?

BTW - Took my new-to-me 10.25 incher Stag Arms, .45 Norinco Commander, and 1919A4 using fabric belts - No FTF's either. Life is good :D

Sounds normal. Just about every semi I have seen in action (you don't notice it as much if you are shooting) will have *some* flash in the ejection port as some powder flakes burning from initial ignition get ejected with the spent casings.

Regards,

I was thinking about this after seeing some videos of full auto fire, watching sparks and flames coming out of the ejection port.

Is it possible that when the casing is ejected, inertia keeps the burning remains of the powder suspended in the chamber and then is pulled out the port after the casing?

I didn't see it happen after every round, but then some rounds are loaded up slightly more than others.

Normal with an Ar platform. The gas used for cycling the action travel thru the gas tube and are are directly pushed inside the bolt carrier to help unlock the action. This make a pressure outwards to unlock the bolt from the inside of the carrier.

If you look at your bolt carrier, on the right side, you will see two holes. When your action is unlocked and your bolt carrier gained momentum. The unlocking movement of the bolt opened, at the same time, these two holes and allowed the excess of gas to be evacuated.

Usually, the residual gas that are evacuated, are normally cold enough not to produce flames, but if you are shooting hot loads, sometimes you can see fire coming out of these two openings. Of course, in the dark you can also see some little sparks coming out from the chamber or the empty case, but that's a different phenomenon.

Wear those safety glasses ;)

I've notice that you will always see sparks from the ejection port depending on the angle you are viewing from (a one specific angle you will see a nice little light show).
