My RCBS 505 scale is getting a bit touchy and ready to go back for service. It is time to get a backup scale and I think perhaps it is time to invest into an electronic scale.

The Chagemaster 1500 and Rangemaster 750 come into mind. Please help me to decide:

1) How often does one measure above 750 gr? 750 should be able to measure brass weights.
2) Any other reason to buy the 1500 if you don’t need the upgrade feature to an automated powder dispensing system.
3) Are there another brands that I should consider?

That was my logic as well. I got the 750 and I like it.

Check out eBay item 5030188477: 50gm/772gr digital scale, less than $40 incl shipping & exchange rate. 1500gr also available at same pricing. They have to be the best digital bang-for-yer-buck around, friends & I have been very pleased with them. kfn

I thought about these things too. The highest powder weight I've seen in books is 230'ish for 50's, so the 750 should easily handle that. You can even confirm bullet weights for the 50 cal.
Seeing as I'm not even close to loading for a 50, I bought the 750, and I love it. Kicking myself for waiting this long :( .

Have you compared the accuracy of these scales with a balance type scale. How do they compare as far as precision? Do you have to recalibrate it often or will it keep it's 0? Do you use the electronic scale for sorting brass & bullets or for weighing powder.

Thanks,

I'm told The Source (formerly RatShack) has a sale on digital scales at the moment. Not sure what make/model.

Hi Diver; I check mine each time with a 50gm weight and it always reads 50.00gm since the initial calibration when I first got it. I only weigh powder with it but as it goes up to 772gr it should cover most uses, if not then the 100gm/1500gr would. One advantage is that you can put a powder pan on and tare it to read zero. I haven't compared the accuracy with a triple beam balance scale but I do have one comment about that in that a balance scale should be read directly at eye level for the most accurate reading. Most reloaders usually have the scale on the bench while sitting above it and not at eye level. This is eliminated with the digital display.
ps the Lyman Powder Pal pan works great as it also has a built-in funnel in the side to pour direct into the casing.

kfn, what kind of battery it is using?

Interesting! Sounds like this is as good as the RCBS units at 1/3 the price.

Hi kfn,

I appreciate the info. I will be ordering one this weekend. I have alway's wanted a digital scale but I never wanted to invest a large amount of money into one. This one seems to have excellent features and a great price. I will post comments once I receive it and have a chance to compare it to my Redding No. 2 scale.

Thanks,

Thanks

HI Danny Boy

The unit described on the 6mmbr site goes for $275 maybe a little less on sale. i don't think i would fork over a grand for a scale unless it always told my wife she was thin.

My new RCBS 1500 is going back for repairs and I am not impressed. The thing will not hold zero for more than 20 seconds. They told me it was static. BS wipe it with a static cloth and it still wanders around.

Well I am on my second Neva 100G scale. The first one arrived with the right most digits not functioning. Had it replaced.

The replacement unit works but I find it measuring 0.4 gr more than the RCBS 505 scale. In addition, it measures inconsistently. I wouldn't mind if it measures consistently more as long as it is consistent. Unfortunately it is not. The best I will use it for is measuring brass and bullets.

For $38 it is not a good buy and I recommend against it for measuring powder.
