Elephant Rifle vs Ballistic Gel

An elephant skull would be hard to replicate in a controlled setting. Maybe shooting through a Chevy big block?

I would agree with this except for the "through the skull" part. I read several accounts in Dr. Don Heath's writings - 7.62x39 is very common "poacher" rifle in Africa Parks - especially when the "park officers" happen by... Heath guided his daughter to her first elephant - a heart shot with a 7x57...
 
The shots are at point-blank range. I would like to see what the gel looked like if he had have backed up 50M. My buddy has a Win Mod 70 African in .458WinMag. He bought two boxes of 500gr shells and we tested it off the hood of my truck. I'm 6'3" and 240lbs. The most I could shoot consecutively was 3 shots. That combo backed me up a foot and my shoulder ached for a week.
 
"Point blank range" means a distance at which no holdover is required to hit the target, so over 100 yrds and then some with most centerfire rifles. Depends on what your zero is. Looked like 5 to 10 yds to me?

Oh yes punishing rifle, I have a Zastava in 458WinMag, must weigh around 13 pounds. I still have not worked up loads, its not something you take to the range and fire off a couple dozen rounds.
 
Ive fired 55 rounds with my 458wm in a single sitting prone over bags. 405 gr rem fnsp at 2400 fps. I ended up bleeding thru both nostrils and my right arm was considerably slower then my left thruout the day. I did bruise but no real worse than shooting a 100rnds of trap with a 6.5lb sxs. My gun weighs in at around the 10lb mark. 458wm is not that bad to learn to master. Its a reloaders dream though. From cast bullet loads which make it a big bore pellet gun to a mad elephant stomper and everything in between.
My current load is woodliegh 400gr ppsn at just over 2400fps from a 26.5" barrel. Dead on at 50 yards it drops only 8" at 225 yards.
With winchester solids ive shot thru a car but havent managed to put a hole thru the block shooting for the fender to fender hole
I may do a 458lott sometime but for now my 458wm suits me well enough and will one day hopefully cape a cape buffalo for me
 
I took my Lott and Rigby to Deer camp so my friends could shoot them yesterday. They had a blast and weren't hurt. I dont find the nosler safari ammo kicks that bad.

Hopefully will be able to take one after a cape buffalo.

It has been close to minus 20 here last couple days so they did have on heavy coats which does help a bit. They shot them standing too, they wouldn't be real fun for long off a bench.

Your 400 grain bullet at 2400 is right around what I am getting with my Rigby. That would be an awesome load for just about anything.

What kind of rifle is your 458? With some of today's powders and if you can seat the bullets out a bit the 458 Win doesn't give up anything to the Lott. I have one in a Zastava, but am restricted a bit on oal so I don't get the velocities I can get in the Lott.

I have fired 20 in one session , 55 might tenderize me a bit too much.
 
Have the same rifle.. she is snappy..
Load development was harsh, even out of the lead sled..

The rifle jumps up.into your face.. leaving you feeling a little concussed.. lol
500 gr sp hornady grouped well. Very well @ 2150..
2300 to 2400 fps still held 2 inch.. but recoil was intense..

Cant wait to see what SCOTT shots next..

13lbs? I wouldn't stress about the recoil if the rifle is that heavy. Where they get ugly is the lighter weight rifles. I've got a #1H in 458. At under 8lbs you know when you've had too much off the bench.

When I bought my #1 the first thing I did was take a drive out west to Alexis Creek and met up with a buddy out at Old Slim's ranch. We spent the afternoon burning up the reloads that came with the rifle, busting rocks on a hillside behind the ranch house. My buddy wasn't much of a shooter, in fact, I don't think he'd ever handled a gun before going to Depot. Still, he handled the recoil of the 458 with aplomb, and we shot until both boxes were empty. Man, that was a fun afternoon.
