I know this has been brought up before, and I have read the posts, so I know what to do, but my question is why. I have just purchased a tasco 6-24x40 and have run out of elevation at 100yds on my .22. I know the scope was not necessarily made for a .22 but I figured I would have lots of elevation. Has anyone else had this trouble at close ranges?

P14shooter,
This isn't that uncommon. I had the same issue putting a 6-24 4200 on a .22 silhouette rifle. Depending on whether you have tip-off .22 rings or real rings and bases you need to shim the bottom of the rear ring or between the receiver and rear base. With typical ring spacing one thousandth of an inch of shim works out to 1" elevation at 100 yards. Aluminum beer can metal is about 6 thousandths. My Anschutz took 18 thou to get out to 100 and still be close to the center of the adjustments. Lapping afterwards is definitely recommended.
.22 style rings can be shimmed with a layer or two of hockey tape laid into the bottom half of the rear ring. There are tapered bases, offset insert rings and a host of other solutions, but they usually don't come up in the same conversation as .22s and Tascos.

I must have done the math wrong, as I had a 1" change at 100 yds as 9 thou, which meant 45 thou to get me in the "x". That meant new rings as I would not want to damamge the scope. I will get that shim in and have at it. Thanks for the help.
